Back in June I started having bleeding from my nipple and found a lump in my breast, my go quickly referred me to the breast clinic where they did a ultrasound on the lump and I was examined by a specialist nurse. They were happy the lump was just glandular tissue and sent me merrily on my way .But then I was called 6 weeks later for review with a consultant. She announced that even though the lump is nothing to worry about, the discharge is concerning and she wants to do a total excision of all the ducts in that breast as this is the only way to find out what is causing the discharge/bleeding and as cancer is a possible cause it needed to be done to rule this out. So I’m booked in for this in a few weeks. I’m really worried. About the procedure, the recovery, the scaring and the waiting for the results! I’m only 38 and really struggling to deal with my emotions at the minute. Finding myself very weepy. Has anyone else had this procedure?
I hope you will meet others on the forum who have had a total duct excision. I did a little search for you to see if I could find others who had had the procedure before and I found for example @Nix81 who mentioned in this thread that she had had a total duct excision in January 2018. Feel free to respond to her thread and I hope she will drop by here and share her experience with you.
I hope the procedure goes well for you - waiting for results is indeed very stressful but you will be in good company here on the forum as so many others here have experienced this long wait and know exactly how you will be feeling.
I would also suggest you contact Breast Cancer Care - you can find out their details here and I am sure they will be able to give you some detailed information on what to expect and answer any questions you may have.
Keep us updated we'd love to hear from you again.

Hi, I am facing the exact same thing at the moment. I am waiting for my date for the opperation and it should be through in the next couple of weeks. I had bloody discharge from my nipple and puckering around the left breast. Scan didnt show any lumps or anything like that but the consultant said i need the oppeation to check for anything else. Im 36 so about the same age. Im finding things hard to cope with at the moment also. Hopefully someone who has actulally been through the procedure will be along as i would like to know the same answeres as you. Take care of yourself xx
Hi Lisa I’ve got my pre op assessment in a few days so I’m hoping to be able to hold it together to be able to ask the questions I need to although I’m finding myself a emotional wreck so this is doubtful! Hope you get your appt through soon. All the waiting is awful.
I had my pre op last week but still dont have the surgery date. I completly forgot all the questions i supposed to ask so i would either take someone with you or write them all down, neither of which i did. I have been going back and forth for a few months like yourself the waiting is the worst bit. Hopefully the end is in sight for both of us.
Hi Littlestar and Lisa,
I am sorry to see that you are both in the same position and still not sure about the procedure. As you have discovered, it is always best to take someone with you to your appointments. It is also a good idea to draw up a list of questions before each appointment. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer and have had a lumpectomy first time around and a double mastectomy second time.
I see that Lucie has suggested that you contact nix81. This is a good idea. You might also find it helpful to use the search facility on the blue banner at the top of this page. Insert total duct excison of breast or similar search words and this should bring up previous posts on this subject.
This is an awful stage. You don't know what is happening, or what will be found, so fear of the unknown is a big issue. Most of us find that our emotions are all over the place in the early srages. Just warn your family that you are not yourelf at the moment. Things will improve once you get your results back. You may find yourself crying a lot. Don't worry about this, as it is a good release valve - just let the tears flow.
I am thinking of you both and hope that your surgeries go well. We ae always here for you.
Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.
Lisa have you had your procedure yet? I’ve just had mine this morning. Was first on the list so home by lunch time. Obviously have the wait for the results now but the procedure itself went well and at the minute I’m not in pain. Hope things are ok with you?
I havent got mine untill 30th November as we have been struggling to get my blood count up and they dont want to do it untill its improved enough but they have said the 30th regardless. How was the procedure, im so scared. Hows the recovery going. Did they say how long you would have to wait for the results, fingers crossed its all clear.
Sorry you’re having to delay your procedure, that’s probable making you more anxious. The procedure and recovery haven’t been as bad as I expected at all and I dont cope well with pain. I’ve tried to really rest though and take care of myself. Results on Thursday next week so fingers crossed x
im good thanks, yes results back and all clear which is a massive relief. Only slight abnormality was some dilated ducts but no cancer or dcis. I’m pretty much fully recovered now just a bit of tenderness still to touch...the scarring will be minimal, you can hardly tell I’d had anything done. So all in all I’m pleased to have it over with and it wasn’t nearly as bad as I feared. How are you doing?
I also had nipple discharge amd went to my GP with this symptom. They referred me to breast clinic and then they did ultrasound there but couldn’t see anything suspicious. They said they still would prefer to do total duct excision to make sure what is causing the brown discharge. I had the operation on 1st October and the results came back two weeks after. Recovery was better than I expected and within a week I went back to work. Unfortunately the results came back with some bad news. They found a 6mm invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) and some high grade DCIS so they couldn’t get clear margins. I had to have another operation on 8th November with an attempt for the surgeon to remove more cancer and also sentinel node biopsy to see if it was spread to lymph nodes. I’m 36 years old with a 21 month old daughter so for me since the diagnosis life has changed a lot and I’m trying to be patient with everything happening. I hope you will get better results after your op and it is easy to say but try ro distract yourself as much as you can with the things you enjoy doing. Whether it is good news or bad news all we can do is to be as strong as possible. If you have any questions please dont hesitate to get in touch with me. Happy to help in anyway I can.
/canarijaune Thanks for taking time to reply to me, I had my results back and thankfully got the all clear. I’m sorry it was not good news for you and wish you well with your treatment. Take care.
Sorry to hear aboyt your bad news. I am having my opperation next Friday. Very nervous to say the least. I had nipple discharge and when they tested it, it contained red bllod cells. My scan didnt show anything up either. Hopefully the results wont take to long to come back.
