Breast pain

Hi. I had breast cancer 10 years ago and had a lumpectomy and radiotherapy. I then got lung cancer in the same side and had surgery this year in February. I have nerve damage in the centre of my breast but I now have pain in the area of my previous breast surgery and it feels really uncomfortable. Is this pain related  to the lung surgery? And how long will it last?

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Unfortunately, we can't tell you anything very specific, as the people best placed would be your original surgical team, or perhaps your GP.

It could be from your original lung surgery. It is possible to have referred pain, meaning pain that originates from an area away from where the pain is. This can happen when scar tissue develops, or when nerve pathway endings (tiny nerve fibres), get damaged. Nerves can take a long time to heal, this can range from months to sometimes longer. That is why we can't tell you how long this will last.

If it is very uncomfortable, try gentle stretching exercises, and apply warm or cold compress to the area. There are some prescriptions medications that do treat different pain, such as nerve pain. So you could speak with your GP about this.

I hope that things improve for you soon,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
