Breast clinic, what will happen at my appointment?

Hi, I am 29 and worrying!

I have a young son and recently found a lump in my breast.

Before the lump was found I had a lot of pain and swelling in that area. It's right under my nipple. The swelling has gone and so has the pain but after 2 courses of antibiotics the lump is still there and obviously more noticeable.

I'm not sure if I should worry because I've heard if it's painful its usually good sign!

Due to covid the GP has referred me to the breast clinic. I haven't yet received my appointment but I am wondering if anyone can give me advice on what will happen during my appointment? Scans etc.

  • Hi. Loads of lumps are beneign, so hopefully yours will be. When i went to the clinic they did an ultrasound, biopsy and i was examined (because i didn't see my dr first). And the staff there were so kind too! I hope you get your appointment soon and all goes well

  • Hi,

Thank you. I hope it is beneign too. I havent seen my doctor due to Covid but they didnt seem too concerned. Thank you, I am hoping it is just a scan - the thought of a biopsy worries me!

Hope all went well with yourself!

I should be getting my appointment through this week, so hopefully I wont have to wait too long x

    HI Mary,

Welcome to our forum. There are three main tests usually carried out on your first visit to the breast clinic. A mammogram, an ultrasound and a biopsy. It is unlikely that you will have a mastectomy, as young people's breasts are too dense to give a clear picture. This is normally kept for us older ladies. Please don't worry about your biopsy. You will normally be given an injection to numb the area first.

You won't usually be given a diagnosis until the results of these tests come back. This usually takes 1-2 weeks. At this stage, your consultant will have held a meeting with his MDT (multidisciplinary team) to discuss your case. If there is cancer present, they will have decided upon what treatment to offer you. When you get your test results back, you will be told what type and grade of breast cancer you have. if any.

What age is your son?  you are right that the breasts are seldom painful with a cancer diagnosis. Quite often there are some changes in the breast after childbirth, so here's hoping that it is something simple like that. Do please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

Thank you, I feel better about the appointment now.

My son is 9 years old now, I will keep you updated once I have had my appointment etc.

    Still waiting on appointment date.

    :)

    Hi Mary,

It always feels better when you have some idea of what will happen. The staff at the clinic are all very pleasant and helpful. Be prepared to be at the clinic for 2-3 hours by the time all your tests are carried out.

I look forward to your update, but am always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi,

I had my tests and that so I'm waiting on results now. I went in expecting just an ultrasound and they did a biopsy too so I'm a little sore but not too bad.

I expect results to be around a week or so as that's what they said so I will update again soon :)

Thank you for your help x

    Hi Mary,

Thanks for the update. I'm sorry to hear that you are a little sore following your biopsy. This is normal unfortunately. It is just as well that you had the biopsy as this is the only way to be certain that there is no cancer present in the tissues, so you know that there is no chance of missing something.

This will be a worrying week for you, as you wait for your test results. Try to keep yourself as busy as pssible to distract yourself from the wait.

Please let us know how you get on.

    Fingers crossed for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I will, I also read the information leaflet wrong. I won't get the results until about 3 weeks.

So I'm glad my son's not at school means we can go on days out take my mind off it.

I still aren't too worried though, they think it could be a papilloma x

  • Hi Mary,

It's handy to still have your son off school and, I hope that between you, you have a great time together. Getting out and about should be a good way to help pass the time.

Three weeks seems a long time to wait for your results. I hope that you get them back a little sooner than that.

    Fingers crossed for favourable results.

    Kind results,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you, I hope I get them earlier too.

The doctor said 3 weeks as my case along with loads of others will be discussed at a big meeting all the departments have and I will be informed of results and next steps after that.

    X
