Breast clinic referral tomorrow

16 Apr 2018 20:32

just over 10 days ago I found a small pea sized lump on my right breast just near my Areola. My gp saw me the same day and could feel the lump and made a quick referral which I’m going to tomorrow.

What should I expect ?

Probbaly should add that I had breast augmentation last year during the summer so hoping this won’t cause too much hassle !

Nervous and apprehensive about the outcome. Getting married in two months. Could certainly do without the added stress

Hi Nicola. It sounds like your gp is very efficient. You've done all the right things. You got it checked and your being referred on.

At the breast clinic expect to have mammograms, an examination, probably an ultrasound and possibly a biopsy. Usually you get to ask questions from a breast care nurse. Don't expect to have results tomorrow. Unfortunately this takes about another week. Try to take someone with you and if you have any questions write these down and ask the person with you to write down the answers you are given.

For many of us that have gone through this it is often this stage that is the most worrying because you simply don't know whats going on. Im not medically trained but following my referral and subsequent diagnosis of breast cancer in March i have done a loy of reliable reading and most lumps turn out to be nothing sinister. You will see i have said reliable reading.....its not a good idea to read everything on the internet as it is not always accurate and based known on research.

Please let us know how you get on tomorrow and if you have any worries there are a few of us breast ladies on here who would be more than happy to help. The ladies have been amazing since I was diagnosed.

All the best for tomorrow x

Hi Nichola,

I am glad to read that you have done the right thing and seen your GP quickly and already had a referral. Cornishpastie has outlined what will happen for you tomorrow. Unfortunately, you will then have about a week to wait before you get the results of any tests that are done tomorrow.

Many cancer referrals do not turn out to be sinister. I am not a doctor, but I suppose that it could be that you have a lump because of the work done on your breast augmentation last year.

Sadly, we could all do without this type of stress, but here's hoping that you don't find more to worry about and can continue to concentrate on your wedding.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

Kind regards,

Jolamine xx

What kind of questions should I be asking ? We’re just having a coffee before we go in (11:45) I literally have no idea what to ask !

Good luck today. Once you have a mammogram you might want to ask what they can already tell you. It's difficult to say what else to ask as some people want to know everything like me and some just a bit. Ask them to write down what they see for you as you can easily forget it. X

Hi Nichola,

I guess that the key question for you today is 'Do you think I have cancer?' They cannot be certain until the results of your tests come back, but often have a good idea. Other questions will develop from one visit to the next, for example, you will probably discuss treatment options at your next appointment. You will also probably want to know whether or not you have cancer, if so, what type and stage, etc.

Don't worry too much about questions at this first appointment, just be led by your consultant. I hope that all goes well.

Regards,

Jolamine xx

So I had an ultrasound done on my breast, the sonographer was a bit rude to be honest. I said as I went in “thought I should mention now that I have had breast aug” before I could even finish she said “I know, it makes this very frustrating for us”

she then after the ultra sound went on to say “I’m pretty sure it’s a cyst but I can’t tell you for sure because you have implants and I’m not going to pop a needle in there because i could pop your implant”

i said “well how can we tell for sure” she just said you can’t.

I wasnt happy with that answer AT ALL.

The dr however who I saw afterwards was very nice and very reassuring. He said everything points to a cyst and I’m confident that is exactly what it is. He went on to say that I should check the lump once a month and report any changes. He said ideally if it grows he would like to pop a needle in but it’s so small at the moment it’s too risky.

Basically just gotta sit back and watch for changes.

Hi Nichola,

This is great news. It's not often enough that people get let off the hook. Don't forget to check yourself regularly and I sincerely hope that you don't get any more worries of this nature.

Kind regards,

Jolamine xx
