Breast clinic referral

My daughter who is 21 has found a lump in her breast so went to her GPS 3 weeks as yesterday, they put her on antibiotics for 10 days as they suspected an infected cyst and told her to call and see them again 2 weeks later. The lump had reduced in size so she felt relieved but when she when back another nurse told her that she no longer suspected it was a cyst as it should have disappeared completely if it was. She told her of the possibility of cancer but said it could also be a fatty lump and she would give her an urgent referral and she would be seen within 2 weeks. It is just over 2 weeks now so my daughter rang the hospital and was told they have just opened up the appointment book for next week and she would receive a letter next week for an appointment, by the time she gets that it will be almost 4 weeks. My daughter is calm about it and I am trying to be, but getting more anxious as time goes on. Is it ok to leave it for this long?

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I can appreciate your concern but please try not to worry too much.

Most people seen at the breast clinic with a suspected cancer will find out they do not have it. And while I know it is a worry that she has has been referred quickly it is reassuring that she will be seen by a specialist breast team who may need your daughter to have scans and possibly (but might not need it) a biopsy to find out what is the matter.

I also know that waiting longer than the 2 weeks is a worry too. I am afraid that this is happening across the UK. However, waiting a couple more weeks is still unlikely to make her situation worse but may cause additional worry.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Hi Caroline

Thank you very much for your reply.

I appreciate your reassurance. Am happy to hear that waiting longer isn't likely to make her situation any worse.
