Breast clinic referral

Hi everyone, new to this so hopefully I'm doing this right.

I went to my gp after 6 or so weeks of experiencing severe breast pain with discharge alongside slight swelling, mainly on my left breast. The gp examined me but couldnt see nor feel any visible lumps but referred me to the breast clinic for further checks just to be safe. She said I should be seen within 2 weeks as that's normally what's aimed for. After hearing nothing I rang the breast clinic today to see when roughly id be getting an appointment to which they told me 4-5 months, I'm thinking this is a good thing but suffer from anxiety so extremely nervous about it all and now the thought of waiting so long. I'm from Northern Ireland.

Has anyone else experienced this before? Many thanks in advance

Caitlin x

  • Hi Caitlin

Not all referrals to the breast clinic are for suspicion of cancer, I would take comfort that your appointment is not for months. I think the breast clinic feel yours is something other than cancer. Try not to worry too much.

  • Hi Caitlin,

I'm also from Northern Ireland and had an appt last Monday as I have had a lump on my left breast for a very long time, of which I think has got more prominent, and causing slight tenderness.  I was toldit will take a few weeks for an appointment and literally got a call from the booking centre the following day.  My appointment is tomorrow morning.

I am convincing myself that it will be nothing and I'm hoping that is the case but its natural to worry.

I'm assuming the doctor didn't refer it as an urgent appointment or you would have had the same treatment as myself.

  • Hi Caitlin,

Your appointment not being for a while is a good thing, they may not have deemed it necessary for you to be seen on the two week wait. However, if you are worried then maybe it would be good to go to your GP and explain the situation.

roxy - I am in the same situation as you but my appointment is on Monday. I was referred on Tuesday and called today. Hope everything goes well for you both and let me know :-) x

  • Hi Caitlin have you had an appointment as yet?? X

  • How did you get on with your appointment 100Roxy?  Are you keeping okay?

  • Hi all new to this too , I am 46 and have naturally lumpy breast and I think I may be starting to go through the menopause also have fibroids so my hormones are all over the shop. My right breast is really lumpy at the min so visited my gp as I can also feel like a really small grizzly lump and she has referred me under the 2wr , I'm panicking like mad and my appt is the 26th may. My dr says she thinks it's fibrotic tissue and not to worry but I can't help it , anybody else had similar

  • Hi,

Im 40 and my appointment is on Thursday at the  breast clinic and I feel sick and I'm having almost  constant panic attacks. .my mum (who is fine now thankfully ) had hormone related cancer age 49 in one breast and beginnings of it in the other this puts me borderline at risk .I've felt/ imagined a lump for over a year - convinced myself it was nothing ,as other breast felt similar but now can still feel it along with a lump next to it which has been confimed by doctor. I feel like I need to phone her back and analyse everything she said I think sometimes I press the lumps so hard it disappears in or sinks so I keep thinking well it must be a cyst .i also mentioned lumps get bigger and smaller with monthly cycle - but now I dont think that's true and I've been lying to myself I feel so stupid and keep wondering what my 9 year old boy will do without me .

I know this sounds garbled and ridiculous but I'm at home ,home schooling and I cant focus and snapping all the time !

  • Hi All,

    Im in a similar situation.

29, found a small hard breast lump a few months ago. Brushed it off as nothing but its been niggling at me. Also developed pain in different part of my breast which may or may not be related. Finally got the courage to see a Dr today. Been referred to breast clinic, should be seen within 2-3 weeks. Been told that as im young its likely not to be serious but still cant help but worry

  • Hi all,

I had an appointment in the breast clinic on the 9th of March for a super hard lump. This turned out to be just very nodular tissue and nothing to worry about - so good things do happen! Hope you're all ok and try not to think the worst x

  • Hi Becnic

How did you get on? I've been to see the GP today with breast pain I've had for 6 weeks. The doctor has referred me to the 2WW clinic, as she thought there was increased nodularity in my right breast near my nipple  which is constantly aching.
