Breast Cancer , very scared waiting for referral

Hi Everyone,

I am very new to this and also very scared. I have noticed on the lower side of my left breast there are 2 patches where it looks like my breast is being pulled inwards. If i stand with my arm above my head it is very noticable and it never used to look like this. My nipple on this side also leaks at times and quiet often feels sticky. I got my husband to have a look to check i wasnt imagining it and he spotted it straight away.

I went to the doctors yesterday and she also spotted it straight away. She has refrered me to the breast clinic on the 2 week wait system and all she could say was try not to worry but she doesnt have xray vision which i understand.

I am so scared has anyone else had this kind of systems and it urned ot to all be fine.

  • Welcome to the forum LisaR.

I'm sorry about how scared you are at the moment but you did the right thing by going to the GP and now you've been referred to the breast clinic they can examine you in more detail and let you know if it is any cause for concern.

Waiting for tests and appointments can be really tough as many of our members know and hopefully some of them, especially breast cancer ladies, will be along soon to offer their support and advice.

In the meantime try to stay busy if you can as many have found this to be a good distraction whilst waiting. Easier said than done I know but if you feel like it's getting to you then do chat to us here on the forum as you will find others who will really understand how you're feeling and what you're going through at the moment.

Let us know how you get on when you can Lisa. Fingers crossed it's nothing sinister.

    Kind regards,

  • Hiya. Sorry to hear of your situation.

I was in your place in February waiting for tests following an abnormal mammogram. I had no symptoms, no pain, and had just attended a screening when called up at random.

When you get to the breast clinic expect to have a mammogram, examination and probably ultrasound and possible biopsy. Ungirtunately they still won't be able to tell you that day what is happening, and I'm afraid you will have about another week to wait til the results come back. This is definately the most awful time as you just don't know what you are dealing with.

Mine unfortunately came back as stage 1 invasive breast cancer and I had two lumpectomys in the same breast and node removal 2 days ago. I'm due to have radiotherapy once we know it hasn't gone farther. Followed by 5 years hormone therapy.

What I wanted to tell you is that not all referrals turn out to be breast cancer, a lot dont. But I have had an enormous amount of support from the ladies here on this site and whatever your results you will find a way to keep going. If you need us we are all here. Fire those questions away and let those anxieties out and your appointment will be here soon.

Please come back and let us know how you get on. We had 3 ladies last week who all got the all clear after tests so there are positive outcomes. All the best to you that you become the fourth x

    Hi Lisa,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am so sorry to hear about the changes in your breast. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer and know just how worrying it is waiting for your first hospital appointment and for subsequent tests. It is a scary time and Steph is quite right in that the best thing you can do is to keep as busy as you can. If at all possible do not spend hours consulting Dr Google, as this will scare you stiff, for no good reason. If you must look things up on the internet try to stick to well respected and researched sites.

Cornishpastie was one of the unlucky people to join our midst and she has only just had her operation. She has told you of the tests you are likely to have and that you will then have to be patient for another week or so before you get to find out the results. Can you take someone with you to your appointments? This can be a great help. It is also useful to draw up a list of questions between each appointment, as it is all too easy to forget them at the time of your consultation.

Please let us know hen you get a date for your appointment and how you get on at it. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi All,

Thank you for all the support. I keep going round and round in circles in my head imagining the worst. I have just had a call from the hospital with my appointment being next Monday on 23rd. I’m trying not to send myself crazy in the meantime. At least I have a date now and they were pretty fast so that’s cuts the worrying time down. Fingers crossed it’s a positive outcome.

  • Could this week go any slower. I can’t sleep and spend half my time looking at and prodding my breast around in the vain hope it will have all gone away.

  • I was like that when I found my lump night before Good Friday. Kept feeling to see if it was there or if I had dreamt it. Totally agree with the lovely ladies on here the waiting is the worse. Think I have been through every emotion going from crying to why me? I had an appointment yesterday to “find out my results” only to be told inconclusive so now need to take lump out. On the positive note may not be anything nasty and that’s the hope I am clinging on to. Try and keep positive but I know it’s hard x

  • Lisa it will get here sooner than you think. Try to find things to do each day to keep you occupied. Please keep us up to date on how you are doing x

  • Hi Lisa,

I know exactly how you are feeling, I found a lump the Wednesday (as well as my nipple being inverted) before Easter rang the doctors on Thursday and got in for the Tuesday after bank holiday weekend. He referred me urgently and said there is a strong possibility you have breast cancer.

The gp referral was to be seen within 2 weeks, unfortunately in Wales even if you have an urgent referral they don’t have to see within the 2 weeks. Having chased the hospital and the gp my appointment is on Sunday 2 and a half  weeks since I saw the gp.

The waiting is awful and I am also struggling, although the last few days now I know that at least I am getting seen I do feel better.

Try and keep busy, easier said than done I know.

    Keep positive x

    Hi Lisa,

Time almost seems to stand still when you are waiting, but you are nearly there now. Can you bring someone with you to your appointment? This is always helpful.

Don't expect to know whether or not there is anything untoward on Monday. You will probably be examined by your consultant and then have tests. It usually takes about another week before you get the results of these tests and know for certain.

Try not to prod your breast around any more, as you don't want to spread anything.

I shall be thinking of you on Monday and hope that all goes well.

    Kind regards

    Hi Becs,

I am glad to hear that you are feeling a little better now that you have an appointment date. It sounds as if your clinic is trying to catch up on appointment waiting times if they are consulting on a Sunday. This is always a worrying time, as is waiting for your test results - usually about another week.

Please let us know how you get on on Sunday. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
