Breast cancer scare? Don't know what to think

Hi all,

I"m 28 and I found a lump in the upper outer quadrant of one of my breasts about a month ago. I check semi-regularly and this lump seemed to have sprung up out of nowhere. Within a couple of days I had an appointment with my GP and she said she didn't know what it was but that it was mobile which is a good sign. She sent off a referral to the breast clinic and 2 weeks later I saw a surgeon who palpated it and said it doesn't feel sinister but needs investigating. She suspected it might be a fibroadenoma but couldn't confirm it without a scan.

As it didn't seem urgent, I had a 3 week wait until my ultrasound this morning. The radiologist said she couldn't tell what the lump is and she found something suspicious in one of the lymph nodes in my armpit. She said I needed a mammogram and a biopsy which I had then and there.

I don't know what to think. The lump is big (5cm x 5cm) but it's mobile. It was especially painful around the start of my period but outside of those couple of days it only gave me the odd twinge of pain here and there. The GP and surgeon seemed unconcerned but the radiologist today was saying "are you alright? Did you bring someone with you for support?" even though I wasn't really upset or anything. I'm absolutely terrified but I don't know what to make of it. Would they have said something to help prepare me if they suspected it was malignant? Did anyone else go through something similar and find out it was benign? Is it often difficult to diagnose a fibroadenoma without a biopsy?

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, conc3rned.

I'm sorry to read about your situation, I'm sure that  'something suspicious' and a biopsy right then and there didn't help to ease your worries.

While I can't think of anyone who had those tests on the spot as you did, we have many others who had their lumps examined and I hope some of them will soon make a stop to chat with you and offer support.

As for your other questions, if you feel like speaking with someone with a medical background might help, please know our lovely nurses are available to take your call  Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on this freephone 0808 800 4040.

Once you find out more please come back and give us an update if you find a moment, conc3rned. We're keeping everything crossed your tests will show nothing sinister.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello.

I have had two breast biopsy's, one lump was the size of a grape that I could actually hold and you could see without laying down and the other was small and movable.

Both turned out not to be cancer. They never actually told me what they were, and after a few months they went by themselves.

It is absolutely terrifying waiting, and living in your head during that time but hopefully yours is benign also.

    I hope this helps.

    Goodluck

  • Hi, thank you so much for replying! It's comforting to know that you've had something similar and it turned out to be benign. I'm trying to stay positive but it's difficult - thank you for putting my mind at ease a bit

  • Your welcome

I understand it's hard to stay in a positive mind frame, all negativity enters your head as soon as something like this happens.

I hope you get the all clear! Good luck x
