Breast Cancer Referral

Hi,

My underarm began swelling on my left side, over a month ago and have had shooting pains in the left breast on and off. I thought it was in my head and thought nothing of it. Then before Christmas it started to get a bit tender, where the swelling is and thought it was time to get it checked out. I spoke to my GP yesterday, they examined me and have referred me for a 2 week wait.

I know it was only yesterday, but how long should I wait for the appointment to come through,  a week? the full 2 weeks?

What can I expect for the first appointment, will it take a few hours? Would I need the full day off work?

I'm soo worried about my family and what happens if I can't help to support them, as a mum and a wife. I know I am jumping to conclusions and it is most likely nothing, more a precaution, but I just don't know how I am going to keep distracted until I've been seen.

  • Hi CMix,

So sorry you're going through this it can be a worrying time can't it!  I've had not exact but semi similar symptoms to yourself I went to my doctors last Tuesday who examined me and put me on the 2 week wait list 2 days later I had a call offering me an appointment for Monday (yesterday).  I went had another physical examine after again explaining my symptoms etc I had a mammogram, ultrasound and a breast core biopsy (tissue aspiration) of the lump in my left armpit.  Now awaiting my results which should be next Tuesday.  That's my experience anyway but you may have different tests done to myself I guess it depends on what they think needs to be looked at.  I really do hope you'll be ok though and wish you all the best whatever your outcome is too.  Everyone who has replied to me on here has been so nice and reassuring.  Just do yourself a favour and stay off dr Google!  The main thing is you've taken first step by seeing your gp the rest the will come and cross each bridge as or if and when you get to it.

    All the best

  • I would wait for 2-3 days then follow up. I waited 10 days before I chased it up, only to discover that a clerical error had resulted in the referral not being made at all.

  • Hi Mumoftwo35

sorry that you are going through this as well, I hope things will be ok for you too. If you don't mind me asking, did they give you any initial results from the scans? Or will they wait for the biopsy to give you the full results? How long did the appointment take? Reassuring that you got your appointment within a week. Hopefully I won't have too long a wait. Yes, Dr Google is dangerous but can't help it at times.

please let me know how to get on and wish you all the best

  • Hi Gallimimus,

I will do, thank you, got the letter today to say to call by Thursday if I don't hear anything. Sorry to hear that they made an error with the referral.

Have you had your appointment or is it coming up?

    Take care

  • I personally didn't get any scan results but I know some on here who have, the only scan result I did get was the ultrasound on my left armpit and that was purely because I could see the screen next to me and my consultant said I don't like the size and shape of that and that's the lump he took the core biopsy from.  My whole appointment was just under 45minutes but I was in there about 2 hours total because of the nature of the clinic they give all patients the time they need with doctors, nurses etc to ask any questions, get reassurance who whatever they need which is entirely understandable so be prepared to not go in on time.  So for now I just wait for the results next Tuesday and see what they come back with really.

I will update you when I know take care of yourself and let me know when you get your appointment.

  • It's good they give everyone the time to talk through everything. The NHS is great, but this doesn't happen as often these days.

I will do, take care x

  • Hi,

The clinic called today, I have been booked in for 20th Jan. At least I have a date now.

  • Good so pleased to hear you now have your date through, least it's the next step now.  How are you feeling about it?

  • Just really anxious, I don't really have a big support network around. Have my husband, but my mum passed away a few years ago and my best friend last December. I do have my mother in law and another close friend, and very grateful for them. I've seen two loved ones go through this and know it will be hard. But again I'm thinking the worse, just need to more be positive, as there is literally nothing I can do about it.

How have you been feeling awaiting your results?

    x

  • I'm same as you I don't have a big support network either and I'm not one for talking to others about my issues either, so far it's only the people on here I've actually told.  Glad you do have some around you though you are allowed to take someone along to clinic with you too due to the nature of the clinic.  More than understandable that you're anxious given what you've seen others go through and what you're experiencing yourself it's definitely the not knowing that's crippling!  Feeling anxious myself with regards to the results also I knew my son was turning 10 next Tuesday but just didn't think until this morning that I will receive results on his birthday too which I really wish wasn't the case, other than if they're good obviously.

    Very mixed emotions time
