Bowel cancer

Hi, I had an op 3 weeks ago today to remove a tumour from my sigmoid colon. The op went well and I am making a good recovery. Now waiting to hear about chemo.

If you are offered screening for bowel cancer please take the tests which could save your life! I am only 56 and the diagnosis came as a complete shock. It can affect people of all ages but can be treated if caught early enough. I remain positive and hopeful that I can recover.

Please say hello if you are also living with bowel cancer.

Jo x

  • Hi did you nor have any symptoms at all?? I hope your recovery goes well x

  • Hi, I noticed a bit of blood in my poo in February which I thought was maybe piles and I also felt a bit constipated! I felt a bit tired but put the latter down to the menopause. I went to my GP about the blood and was fast tracked for tests. They revealed a 35mm tumour in my sigmoid colon which was removed via keyhole surgery on the 20th April. The surgeon said the tumour had probably been there for years but hadn't revealed itself until now! I had no weight loss or loss of appetite, no pain, no weird lumps . Jo
  • Hi Piscesjo, I was diagnosed with bowel cancer in sigmoid colon in november 15 and had surgery to remove that part of bowel, didnt have to have a stoma bag.  You sound positive, positivity will so so help you get through this.

  • Hi octopus99.  How's it going? I am trying to stay positive and make the most of every day! My surgeon also managed to re sect my bowel so also no bag although I was marked up for one prior to the op. Did you have to have chemo? Jo

  • Yep I had six months tablet chemo. Think they mark everyone up in case, I didnt have keyhole, was in theatre 10 hours, hell for hubby waiting for a call. Are you a pisces?

  • That's a long time time in surgery. Mine was just over 3 hours. How did the chemo affect you? Yes I'm a Pisces

  • hi jo i went for a bowel screening test last monday and the test revealed that i had malignant colonic tumour but the surgeon couldnt go round my whole bowel because of malignant stricturing tumour so have to have a ct scan in a couple of weeks so have to wait glad you are making a good recovery
  • Hi Jono, I also had a stricturing tumour. The scope just about passed through. They biopsied it and I was also referred for a CT scan which necessitates drinking loads of aniseed flavoured fluid over a time period of about 2 hours. The actual CT scan of abdomen and chest only took about 5 minutes. I hope yours goes well and you get the results quickly. Jo
  • Hi I was diagnosed with bowel cancer Jan 2016 at the age of 39. Was the most scary thing ever, I kept pushing for screening but kept being told I was to young to have bowel cancer even though my dad had it two years previous. I had blood and loose bowels and turned out I had an 8 cm tumour which I had removed, luckily no bag. I then had 6months of chemo thru drip and tablet form, it wasn't the best but I am glad I had it as I'm here to tell the story. Stay positive and good luck, you got this xx

  • Yep it was they removed my lymphs in stomach, shaved stomach wall as precaution and took out left ovary which was stuck to bowel. 6 month tablets were OK. Some side effects but nothing you cant cope with. Sandly in Dec 16 a ct scan showed tumour in my liver. Sonow just had 3 months vein and tablet chemo finished couple weeks ago. Will need liver section around July. Ive coped with things, I will do again and get through it. Its bowel cancel in the liver not liver cancer. Chemo hopefully has shrunk it. Im a Pisces too.
