bowel cancer

My Auntie was diagnosed with terminal cancer this week at stage 4 started in the bowels and spread to the liver within a short space of time from having symptoms which started in November! She has an appointment to have a start date for chemo, I'm just writing to ask if anyone has any opinions on other things she could try? Or medical... If you could give me some advice I would really appreciate it many thanks

  • Hello Stevie123,

A big welcome to our friendly forum! We have many members here who have been affected by bowel cancer and I am sure they will be along soon with some suggestions.

We also have a detailed information page here on Bowel Cancer which may provide some answers to questions you may have or give you some tips on what to ask your doctor. Feel free also to ring our specialist nurses on 0808 800 4040 Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. They also have an Ask the Nurses topic area if you need expert advice and have any medical or cancer-related question.

I will now let our other forum members come and say hello!

  • Hi-ya = we share a common name!!! Welcome here - I am really sorry to hear abot your aunty - BC is horrid.  The internet is full of alternative treatments - but the snag is that (1) they most likely are useless (2) they may interfere with the chemo rendering it useless. The chemo is good and does work although very strong.

She should reduce her sugar intake - I believe sugar doesn't help and she should keep up her exercise if she can.  Personally, I find meditation helpful = there are several available on Youtube - I especially like Tara Brach her talks on self compassion = have helped lighten the emotional load and impact of BC.

It was my wife  sho had this malady and mercifully she now is in remission.  Its a real emotional rollercoaster = and an important time.

I welcome you here - it must be hard for you as well. We don't know te future and when a relative has been diagnosed -its so scary and terrible and the unknown looms large. Let me hold you and offer warmth in this scary place.

There are many medicaal research trials - you can find some on this website - maybe Aunty might like to try them and see iff she will benefit. In the meantime - tell her that the doctors are great and during her chemo she will meet others with BC and learn just how common it is.

All the best to you and yours this morning

    xx

    Steven
