Blood in stool

Hello, I am 18. Since the end of February, I have had persistent bleeding during a Bowel movement (on the toilet paper and also sometimes on the stool) this is bright red blood. I have more recently experienced wet flatulance that produce a mucus that is sometimes clear and sometimes bloody. I've also noticed that there is lots of Mucus on my stools sometimes. I've contacted the doctors numerous times and they've said it is piles however due to covid19 I've not had an examination and therefor it's just a guess. I've tried creams and they havent worked. I'm now really worried that this could he serious as it has now been 3 months and hasn't gone away.
had anyone got any advice ?

  • Hi,

I am 22, I had all of the above symptoms you have mentioned, blood and mucus, started a few years ago..I would have been 19/20.. a colonoscopy found it to be ulcerative colitis. To get diagnosed I initially had many doctors appointments that didn't really do much, I took myself to A&E (as the bleeding worsened) which is where I got a referral for the colonoscopy. Be persistent with your doctor or take yourself to A&E. Do you have any stomach aches? Or a bloating feeling? My bloated feeling would usually be worse in the morning as I wake up. I have been in what they call 'remission' for a while (no bleeding, no pain).

I would advise to go get it checked. Try not to worry & I hope it all goes well.

  • Hello,

Thank you for replying. I sometimes get stomach aches that relieve after a Bowel movement and I often get loud stomach sounds that aren't related to hunger I'm not sure if this is a coincidence or is related.
I agree my doctor seems quite dismissive of the situation so I will keep trying.
Would you be able to explain your symptoms before your diagnosis if okay.
    many thanks xx

  • Hi,

Sure, It started with a tiny bit of blood that I noticed on the tissue after going to the toilet. It then slowly begun to get worse, the bleeding got heavier and went on for over a month. If I had been such a worrier and went to A&E as soon as I did, it probably would have gone on for much longer.  I would get sudden urges to go to the toilet, a bruised and swollen feeling in my stomach, I would and still do, get stomach aches before I go to the toilet, that relieve once I have gone to the toilet (I don't get this every time though). I find if I drink a can of coke, I will get a sudden urge almost immediately, 5 minutes after drinking it.. so I can't/don't drink fizzy drinks anymore. I also saw a lot of mucus in my stool, sometimes with blood, sometimes without. I would be very fatigued (I am borderline anemic as well though)  If I think of any other symptoms I will let you know but I think this is all I can remember for now.
are they any other symptoms you are having? Xx

  • Hello,

Thank you so much for answering. Your symptoms almost sound identical to what I am experiencing now. I do sometimes find that it hurts when I go to the toilet but not always.  I'm wordering if you had mucus when you passed gas? (Sorry it's a bit of a gross question) this isn't all the time just occasionally. I am also starting to feel very fatigued recently and I assume it's related

  • I believe I have yes, this would generally be when trying to go to the toilet, if I felt really gassy Or got pain, I would try to go to the toilet but sometimes it was just wet flatulence, or mucus type stuff. This happened occasionally X

  • Yes that is what I am expericing, it seems to be similar to you.
As you said you have ulcerative colitis, I've done some research and most sites mention diarrhoea in which I haven't experienced so I'm not sure if it could be this.
Of course I am not self diagnosing myself but it is nice to hear that someone has experienced this as well and maybe I am closer to finding out what it is x

  • I rarely ever experience diarrhoea, I go to the toilet a lot, but it's genuinely always a hard stool. I am having a small flare up now, which is how I stumbled across this post as wanted to read for myself on forums, but not once have I had diarrhoea.
If anything, I'm getting some constipation at the moment. It can vary, every body is different.

But yes it is best not to self diagnose, it only causes much worry and stress, which will make you feel worse (I know). I hope you get it checked soon and find answers!! If possible/if you remember, let me know how you get on when you do get tests and more answers! Wish you the best of luck!

If you have any other questions, I'm happy to help where I can :)

    X

  • Thank you ever so much for replying to my post. You have been extremely helpful and have reassured me, it's nice to know someone else has/is expericing what I am.
I will definitely let you know the outcome of this when I can
