Bladder cancer timescales

My dad was admitted to hospital three weeks ago after my sister spotted blood in his toilet. Tests said his kidneys were at 3%. He said he felt fine.

After a procedure on his kidney his doctors told me he suspects his kidneys began to fail due to a blockage in his bladder. He strongly belives it's bladder cancer. Other scans show masses on his lungs and abdomen if that's correct the prognosis is terminal. He had a turbt procedure on Monday and we are waiting for results.

He suffers from korsakoffs which means he has an inability to remember things.

Just looking for advice on how long he may have left given the disease seems advanced and also on how to tell him? He has intellect so he'll understand and be upset but then he may forget again in a few days which would mean telling him again which seems cruel

  • Hello Kevan.

Welcome to the forum although I'm sorry to read about the news that brings you here.

The only people who will be able to give you an idea about how Dad's illness my progress will be the team caring for him. If you haven't already had chance to talk with them then that would be something to organise. If you and your sister are able to talk with the team, they may be able to answer some of your questions about his prognosis and you'll also be able to discuss what/how much Dad is told.

If it would help to speak to one of our nurses at any point, then they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Sending our best wishes.
