Bladder cancer question

3 weeks ago my OH passed bright red blood in his urine every time he went to the toilet for one day. Urine showed no sign of infection Thankfully the gp referred him on the 2 week urgent care plan and he's had a CT scan yesterday and having a cystoscopy tomorrow  He's lost weight too

He's convinced himself though that because it was just one day of passing blood and apart from weight loss, which he's put down to active job thees nothing wrong.

Really I'm just wondering if anyone else has had any experience with this type of problem

 Thankyou

  • Hi Mariah67.  Welcome to the forum.

I'm 65 and I had prostate cancer back in 2010.

Just before Easter this year, I had a single episode of passing blood in my urine. I had the CT scan which was ok, and a cystoscopy which showed a very early stage cancer. This was removed in a TURBT operation a few weeks later, and I'm now awaiting my first follow up cystoscopy.

I think I was both unlucky and lucky.  I was unlucky because the consultant told me that in 80% of cases of blood in urine they never find any reason, and lucky because I didn't ignore that single episode and went to my GP.

At 65, I'm at a stage where I should expect to have more cancers, but I suspect your husband is a lot younger than me and hence cancer is less likely.

All you can do now is await the cystoscopy and see what it finds. At least you will know either way by the time the procedure is over.  If it is cancer then don't panic and try not to be scared by the word. The standard treatment is a TURBT operation, and that's in and out in one day, with a very quick recovery afterwards.

  • Thankyou for the reply  he's 59 so at an age where I expected them to check for prostate but that hasn't been mentioned..

I know that there are lots of causes that can cause blood in urine, he may have had invisible to the naked eye for a while or it could just be something that happened for that one day and they never fined out.

If I may ask  did they tell you at the cystoscopy that there was early stage cancer or is there a wait for results

  • Hi Mariah

When I went for my first meeting with the urology consultant, she said that normally they'd test for prostate problems as part of the standard protocol, but seeing that my prostate was in a jar on someone's shelf, there wasn't much point :)

More seriously, at 59 if your husband hasn't had a PSA (prostate) test yet, then he really should mention it tomorrow. Or the GP will sort one out for him, but he'll have to wait a week or two after tomorrow's cystoscopy because that will artificially raise his PSA level.

You get to see everything on the screen as the doctor performs the cystoscopy. In my case the cancer looked quite pretty - like a small tropical plant growing in a fish tank.  The very first question I asked was "Is this curable?" and I got an emphatic "Yes".  Fingers crossed that your husband's cystoscopy and CT are clear, and he's one of the 8 out of 10 where they never find anything wrong.

For me it's 2-3 checks over the next 12 months, and maybe annual checks for a few more years. I may or may not need more treatment, but if I do then I'll just have to put up with it. It could be worse and at least the NHS has got my back.

Incidentally, my CT scan also showed a small aneurysm in an artery going to one of my kidneys.  They referred this to another specialist and I got a letter a week or so after my TURBT saying they'd examined the scan carefully and decided this was nothing to worry about, but they'll take another CT next year just to check it's stable.

Best of luck for tomorrow. Let us know how you get on.

  • Thankyou so much for that. It's a bit of a mixed bag thankfully we know that cancer can be beaten, his brother had his voice box thyroid shoulder muscles and lymph meds removed due aggressive cancer 21 years ago and he's still cancer free

On the down side he lost his sister early this year due to oesophagus cancer and his mum 2 years ago from brain and kidney cancer. His dad also died  many years ago from cancer.

All being well though we will be able to put everything behind us tomorrow

  • Hello Mariah67,

Hope you are well. How did your OH diagnosis come out on the end? Hope all is well

    Cheers
