Best treatment for dry gums during radiotherapy

Hi, i wonder if anyone can help me, my husband had a tumour removed in December from his lower jaw, he's now under going 30 doses of radiotherapy which of course has made his mouth dry and his gums are starting to split. I can't find any clear answers on what to treat his mouth with, the initial paperwork said Difflam is ok now I've read elsewhere it can make it worse. I'm looking for something he can put on his gums to ease the risk of it drying out overnight as during the day (when he's well enough) he can sip boiled water (he can't swallow fully as his tongue has swollen up and he's still being PEG fed). He's had an overnight chemotherapy and the next one is due on  Monday.

Any advice would be appreciated, he's struggling to cope with the soreness and if i can find something to help prevent the drying out that would be much appreciated, thnaks, Lisa.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, parr14.

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's situation.

As you asked for advice I thought I might send you some information we have on the website about mouth care and treating mouth problems when you have cancer and I hope this can help your husband with his issues a little.

Also, feel free to phone our cancer nurses with any question you might have, they are available on this number 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday, between 9 a.m - 5 p.m.

    I hope this helps.

Best wishes to you and your husband,

  • Hi thanks Renata I'll ask the nurses on Monday as he's going in for Chemo again, he's using the sponges with water and Difflam at the moment as initially they said that was ok but I will ask the doctors further, many thanks for your reply :-)
