Being treated for throat cancer.

Hi Everyone, just joined. I was diagnosed with cancer on the back of my tounge and lymph nodes. I have so far had 11 lots of radio and 1 chemo. 24 radio and 2 chemo to go. I am losing weight, and a bit dehydrated. Might need to up the pain relief from paracetamol to paracetamol with codein. Swallowing has been painfull, the thick mucus is terrible. I'm having a stomach feeding tube fitted on Thursday (my 65th birthday) so that might help in the long run. It is easy to roll up in a corner and cry into your now empty beer glass, but I believe there are millions of younger people going through far worst, so am thankful for small mercies. If this nightmare has taught me one thing it is to be much more tolerant and understanding to other people, (I was already a softy for animals!) Anyways, I just wanted to say hello. Cheers John.

  • Hi John,

Your humour and comment about animals made me smile from the miserable place I am right now due to an assortment of cancer drug side effects or "adverse events" as they seem to be called. (I am on targeted therapy for stage 4 lung cancer.) You sound like you have got a fair share of challenges with all this but as you say, there are so many people younger than us going through it.

Anyway, Happy Birthday for Thursday. You are getting an unusual gift! Let's hope it helps you.

    All the best

    Joy

  • Hi There,

I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis. It sounds like you have an amazing attitude.

I hope you don't mind me asking but what were your initial symptoms? I've had ongoing throat issues for a while but I am too scared to go to the GP

    Many thanks!

  • Hi john I am waiting to see the head and neck specialist for a large hard lump on my neck finally picked up the courage to go see the gp about it and they have sent an urgent referral I was a bit upset about it but I sat and thought I have seen my children grow up and settle and have thought I am lucky many people didn't get that chance ( including my own husband ) so I will take what comes and seeing your attitude gives me strength good luck with your treatments and I hope all goes well with a positive outlook
