Base Tongue Cancer - my journey

Hello,

I am coming up to the first anniversary of the end of my  tongue cancer treatment - 6 weeks of radiotherapy (30 fractions) and two sessions of chemo.  Because of Covid,  I have only has one physical check since March, however my next one is due next Monday.

I am a 52 year old male, married 2 kids - (14 & 17),  non smoker, ex Army, always stayed fit and had a good diet apart from a few beers and red wine at weekends.  I am an Electrical Contracts Manager which means I,m stuck behind a desk for 80% of my role.

I tought it was about time I looked at some forums and after reading other peoples stories Ithought I'd share mine.

I was treated at in Stoke on Trent and cannot praise or thank enough the staff for the way I have been treated and looked after - it was first class.

Luckily for me, I caught my cancer early by going the GP when small pea sized lump in my neck wasn't going away. After the scans, biopsey and a mucosectomy, they confirmed I had base tongue cancer and a lymph node was also infected.  It all happened very quickly from GP to completing my treatment and it still feels very surreal.  Luckily I had chosen to have a feeding tube fitted before my treatment as I reacted really bad to my first chemo session - nausea, vomiting and mouth sores.  Once I completed my treatment I recovered quite quicky and had the feeding tube removed just before Christmas.   Although I was warned of all the side effects, the recovery stage of my experience is proving mentally to be the toughest.  The constant mental worry of the cancer returning somewhere and the chronic physical side effects.  The physical recovery is almost one step forward two back at times.  I still suffer from ulcers on the side of my tongue, sore throat, tiredness/fatigue, ear ringing, sense of taste still not great and saliva production not the same.  However, after reading other people's accounts on this forum I feel very lucky.  I have always been a very positive person but I must admit I have felt both depressed and anxious at times.

Just wondering if anyone else who has had the same treatment as myself still suffer from tongue ulcers 1 year post treatment.

  • Hi JG484,

Welcome to Cancer Chat - I'm glad you found the forum and I hope it's been helpful so far to write things down. It's good to hear you received good care and in general are making progress.

Your feelings are quite natural, in terms of what you mention about the worry of it returning and the depressive/anxious feelings. You've been through a lot so it's totally understandable. Hopefully you have others around you who you can speak to about all this - or either way this forum is always a safe space to do just that.

If anyone here has any similar experience or other comments to add then hopefully they will be along soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Hi

I've just had lining of the base of my tongue removed yesterday as well as a tumor at back of throat plus tonsils out. I still have treatment to go after I see oncologist. I'm wondering how you are feeling now in 2022?

  • I'm nearly 3 years post treatment.  Still get a slight sore throat and tongue mainly in the mornings, I use effervescent paracetamol.  Tongue sensitive to spicy food.  Saliva quite good, but taste still not 100%. I can drink water, milk, coke, coffee and beer ok, struggle with lemonade, cordials and wine.  Still eat slowly and normally have water with meals.  I love muesli with banana and blueberries and milk.Generally getting back to normal.  Get through your treatment and think positive. All the best

  • Thanks for the update, such a long road to recovery , glad your getting back to near normal.  It absolutely torture for me at the moment every time I swallow and even taking medication hurts. I'm told it will ease off in about 2 weeks or so and become more manageable.

All the best with your recovery

    Sam
