Back on the Merry-Go-Round - again

It's funny how one's life can be turned around in just a few hours.  After having a radical prostatectomy back in 2010, then a suspected bowel cancer referral (clear) a few years later, then a suspected tonsil cancer referral just 12 months ago (also clear), I'm now back on the merry-go-round.  Just 1pm today I had a pee, and passed blood!  Quite a frightening experience. I managed to see a GP at 4pm, and now I'm waiting, once again, for an urgent cancer referral - this time for bladder or some other urological cancer. Given my age (65), it was inevitable I'd get a referral, but it's still no fun.

You'd think I'd be used to all by now - but all the old fears are coming back. It's hard staying away from Dr Google but I hope I know better than to obsessively surf!

  • Hi, sorry to hear your news, it certainly doesn’t get any easier. I am also on that merry go round. I was in remission for only 6 weeks when doc found a lump on my neck on my 2nd followup appointment for NHL. Even my biopsy was a lot more painful than first time. Because it’s too soon to put me back on chemo I’m now on watch and wait. This fills me with dread as if it came back so soon I feel bad that they are waiting till everything gets bad again. Defo worse than the first time. Feel like a sitting time bomb. You have gave lots of advice over the time I’ve been on this forum, all I can say is thank you for the support and certainly hope we can help catch you on your merry go round. Let us know you get on.

  • Hi so sorry to hear you are having trouble, you've helped a lot of people over the years, I used to think you were lucky having your prostate out & getting rid of the problem. I'm not so sure now. I've had advanced cancer for over 3 years now at least I know where it's gone to. Let us know how things go (And stay off Google) all the best for the future.

  • Cheers Billy. You've helped more than a few people yourself!

  • Hi just a thought could doctor have missed some cells from prostate and its spread from their, bladder is very near. Hope I'm wrong. Good luck when you have tests.

  • Good thought.  When I met with the emergency GP on Friday he asked about my latest PSA reading and looked it up.  It was back in January and was less than 0.1, which is the lowest possible reading. Given this, he thought that prostate cancer recurrence was highly unlikely.  I expect that it will be retested when I go to the clinic (yet to receive a time/date).

I checked on the bladder cancer charity website and they said that one off bleeds like this (at least it's one off at the moment!) always need to be checked, but 75% of them turn out not be bladder cancer. I'm hoping now that I'm in the majority :-)

It looks like I'm in for an ultrasound, a cystoscopy, and an MRI or CT. I hope they can do the first two in one stop.  At least if it's an MRI I won't be put in head first like I was when I had a head/neck scan last year.  I'm in no hurry to go through that again :(

Thanks for replying. It's good to talk!

  • Hi I don't mean prostate cancer I meant if some of the prostate cells have gone to your bladder. Remember with me my prostate cancer went to lymph nodes bones and lung you don't need many cells to spread it about the blood helps +the lymph nodes. Just an idea might be completely wrong.

  • I think any prostate cells would put up my PSA. Currently my PSA is below the level that the machine can detect. No doubt when I get to see a urologist I'll be given a full workover and they'll find whatever is there to find. Meanwhile, I'm just trying to keep calm and carry on.

  • I like the way you say trying to keep calm I know how you feel remember I might still have my prostate but every time I get a pain somewhere or something doesn't quite feel right I all ways first think about C then I think I see specialist in so many weeks it's a relief when he says it's coming back but slowly it hasn't spread any more yet I think about it quite a bit lately I was a lot better when I was working I could concentrate on job know I have to keep an eye on my wife so I can't really go anywhere.

  • I think once you've had cancer treatment, the possibility of recurrence is always there in the back of your mind. We all have to find our own ways of coping.

  • Hi Telemando

Just catching up after a few weeks away xx

I'm thinking of you.....I was at the GPs for a nasty infection....was a bit scared when they mentioned there was signs of blood in my wee test!

Like you say....easy to get carried away and get on the Google. However...GP warned me off this (she said.....blood in wee can be caused by a number of benign conditions). They are hugely more likely not to be caused by cancer.

Also...well, you will already know that blood in wee can be completely unrelated to anything you've had previously.

I will keep an eye out for further news ...hoping this is all cleared up in no time! xxx
