Back mole

Hi everyone. So I have a mole on my back iv had it for as long as I can remember as a little girl I would go to the doctors once a year to have it checked and measured. Recently I noticed it had developed 2 lumps on the mole, I went to the gp the gp told me it was fine nothing to worry about. A couple of days later my gp called me and said he would send a photo of the mole that he took that day across to a dermatologist just to be sure. For the past 2 days the area around the mole has been itchy and tingling. I called my gp who said this was nothing to worry about said the tingling and itching can be caused by heat or anxiety. I don't believe this iv been searching itching and tingling moles and I keep seeing melanoma skin cancer. The one thing the doctor is avoiding saying.

  • Hi,

Itching & tingling of moles can be due to more than one thing so try not to worry about that at the moment. The good thing is that your GP decided to get a second opinion from a dermatologist to ensure that nothing is missed. GP's follow the NICE guidelines and score the mole a point for every change it exhibits (ABCD rules). If they score 3 or more points or the GP is still unhappy about how it looks they can either send the photo to dermatology or refer direct to dermatology. It doesn't mean your GP is skirting around the issue - they don't mention melanoma because they really can't tell. The dermatologist is the expert and will decide, from the photo, if they need to see the mole & check it under a dermascope (this shows any changes in the cell structure of the mole). All you can do is sit tight and wait to see what the dermatologist says. If they say it looks fine, just ask your GP to pass on that it's now itching - they may then decide to see you.

Good luck & please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)
