Awaiting 2nd lumpectony

Hi, I'm 54 years old and have early DCI breast cancer. Had my 1st mammogram this year in July and the calcifications were found in the breast. Had my lumpectomy in Aug and tissue and 2 sentinel nodes were taken. After agonising wait for test results the nodes were clear, the invasive cancer removed  but not a clear margin. My 2nd lumpectomy is next week. It really  knocked me back as physically and mentally I made a fantastic recovery. Now feel back to square 1 and more nervous as I really hoped there would be a clear margin. Horrible time for sufferers, family and friends.

  • Hi there ..

It's a rollercoaster ride this cancer .. it's like being strapped in, and shot off, and just wanting it to stop, but on we go ... all I can say is there's loads of us Brest lasses on that same ride with you .. wer all holding on tight ... so your not alone ...

I had a grade 3 and plumbed for mastectomy, as just wanted it all out ... but I'm a bit older then you, so it was an easier decision for me .. but you've come so far .. just hold on tight ... and kick cancers butt ..

It wants us to feel low, and want to give up .. it doesn't like us strong .. but we've got it on the run .. you just got another blip , but you can do this ... take care .. Chrissie x

    Hi Jaynekol,

I am sorry to hear that you have to have another lumpectomy because you didn't get a clear margin and can fully understand your disappointment.

Instead of letting it knock you back, try to think how lucky you are that this was noticed now. I had my first bout of breast cancer 8 years ago. I was told that it was a rare form of breast cancer and that it was one of the less aggressive forms. The post-op results from pathology showed that my margins were not clear, but my surgeon assured me that he had noticed this at the time and he had taken an additional sliver away.

Imagine then my shock when, almost a year to the day of my first surgery, I discovered another lump in the same breast. I wasn't as lucky as you then, as I had to have a double mastectomy. You are not back to square one. Your cancer has been removed and you just need a little extra  taken away.

Any surgery is always worrying, no matter how minor. I sincerely hope that all goes well for you this time and that you make another fantastic recovery.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Chrissie, thank you for your reply. Sorry to hear you have had to go through this.

You are right it does want us to feel low and the feel g of wishing to escape and forget about it is so overwhelming.

I think what makes it hard for me was after the op thinking it had all gone and feeling relieved. But knowing there was more there makes me realise I can't escape it.

Hopefully after 2nd op will feel stronger  X

  • Hi Jolamine and thank you for your reply. Sorry you have had to go through this. I know I am luckier than most but its just that niggling uncertainty of what the future may hold and how everything changes once you get the diagnosis.

My results were cancelled 3 times and I don't think this helped my anxiety in the build up to getting them.

I hope you are making a full recovery xx
