Any ovarian cancer success stories?

Hi all, my mum has recently had breast tissue removed following a routine mammogram. A couple of days after surgery she started to get pain in her stomach. After visiting the gp he referred her for a blood test which showed a high level of ca125. She then had an ultra scan which showed fluid around her ovaries so a ct scan was arranged. The ct scan showed 4 cysts - 2 on each ovary which they say look suspicious. Is this what they say instead of saying its cancer? They said it could have come from her breast. She is going into hospital Friday for a hysterectomy and the docs say she will probably need chemo afterwards which is scaring the hell out of her. She has been so depressed as no one is telling her anything positive. It's horrible seeing someone you love so so much go through this and not knowing what to say to help her sleep eat etc do any good advice / success stories would be great to show her. She is 65 and very scared X thanks X

    Hi Hayley,

I’m so sorry to hear about your mum. She is fairly going through the mill at present.

Some people don’t want to know much about their diagnosis or staging, whilst others want to know everything. It is unusual for your mum’s consultant not to tell her exactly what is going on.

Do you accompany her to her appointments and do you make a list of questions to ask whilst you are there? It is all too easy to forget some important questions if they are not written down.

In my experience surgeons don’t hold anything back when giving a diagnosis.

I can understand why your mum is so terrified of what is to come. Unfortunately,  there is nothing that you can do to prevent her suffering. Just be there for her and help her to get the answers she wants.

I’m afraid that I cannot give you any info on ovarian cancer success stories, because I am not a medic. I have had breast cancer, which is different.

Once you have the results of the rest of her tests, you might find it helpful to talk to one of the nurses on this site. The calls are free and the nurses are very helpful.

I am sure that someone with ovarian cancer will be along to give you their advice shortly.

I pray that all goes well when she goes into hospital on Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you Jolamine, mums op went well, they didn't remove her womb as it was healthy so we took that as a good sign. We have to wait til 9th June for results from the pathologist but surgeon says she will need chemo to remove a few bits. I wasn't with her when surgeon came round so couldn't ask questions but she doesn't want me to ask anything as she's frightened of the answers. I'm going with her on 9th do will do what u said and write everything down. Thank you x

    Hi Hayley,

It is difficult when your mum doesn't want to know. Just by attending the appointment with her you will find out a lot more. I found my cancer difficult to accept until I took ownership of it and found out all I could about it. Maybe your mum will be the same?

If she really doesn't want to know ask her if she would grant her surgeon the right to speak to you about her prognosis. He cannot speak to you about her unless she has agreed, as this would be in breach of Data Protection Legislation.

I hope that you get some of the answers you want on 9th.

    Take care,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine, I think once mum has been to the follow up app on 9th and knows what's what she will get herself together and face the chemo stronger. She will feel a lot better in herself too as it will be 3 weeks post op.  I just hope whatever they say they say in a positive way as that will help her alot. How are you now, did u have chemo? I hope my mum will be stronger as I believe it knocks you got six X
