Any money advice?

Hello all,

My father in law has just been diagnosed with stage 3a oesophageal cancer looking for advice to see what they may be able to get help with money wise.

His usual wage is 28k which will go down to £23k  whilst on sick of 6 months and £11k then for another 6 months after that.

His wife's income is £7800k she gets full sick pay for 12 weeks, then nothing.

Granted its a higher income than most but they have bills to match and now are having a significent wage drop, is there anything they are eligible for?

Many thanks

  • Hello carlylee16; welcome to this forum.  I am not an expert on benefits entitlement by any means but I have in the past used the Citizens Advice Bureau Benefits Calculator to help others find this out before I retired from public sector housing.  I have to say these were generally fairly straightforward cases and there have been changes to benefits in recent years but I still think the CAB might be the best place to start.  Your in-laws will have to disclose things like savings.  You could ask the CAB to do the calculations but I suspect they are inundated with requests at this time in British society and there might be a lengthy wait to get help.  Also useful is the Government's own website (GOV.UK) from which you can get an in-depth breakdown of the various benefits.

There is also a useful section of the MacMillan Cancer Support website dealing with personal finance and what help you may receive.  I tried to copy you the link but my pc is playing up!  It is not difficult to find however.  Best wishes.  Annie

  • Your fatherinlaw should be entitled to PIP , personal independant payment, speak to cab and or google.

  • Hello carlylee16 and welcome to Cancer Chat!

Annieliz and Tweet have given you some great tips on how to find the financial support your father in law may be entitled to. Our website also has very detailed information on this. I suggest you have a look at our financial support page where you will find a list of government benefits and charity grants your father in law may be eligible for.

I hope this helps and that you manage to find all the financial information you need for your father in law.

    Best wishes,
