Am I over-reacting?

HI. I am a 47 year old newly qualified midwife.

Last smear 2016. I had an ablation in Feb 2017 for heavy periods (no bleeding between periods) and since then I have had spotting and bleeding between periods and after sex and my periods were still heavy. In August my GP referred me to gynae but there was an 8 month waiting list. I did ask for some kind of examination in order to rule out a sinister cause but she refused, stating it was simply a failed ablation and needed a routine referral to gynae only. She prescribed the mini pill but it has made no difference to the frequency of bleeding but has made my periods lighter. I saw my gynae on April 20th and she is doing a hysterectomy on July 3rd.

I have also been suffering repeated UTIs and cystitis and am now on prophylactic antibiotics. I have recently read that urinary symptoms can be a sign of cervical cancer and I am even more convinced I should have had some kind of examination. I have convinced myself they will find cancer when they do the hysterectomy (is pathology automatically carried out on the removed organs?). 9 days to go until my op and I am anxious to get it done as I want the worry removed (everything is being removed) but I am worried about what next if they find cancer.

I am due to start a new job which will be delayed to allow for recovery from my op but will cancer mean further delay or loss of job. The job is 90 minutes away so I will be living away from my husband and children (15 and 19) during work days. Obviously medical treatment and work will have to be organised around each other. Time is passing so slowly because I just want the day to come and I am worrying about cancer and its impact on my life.

  • Hello Cat28 and welcome to our forum.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation and I can appreciate why you are worried. I'm glad though you are being seen so try not to worry too much about what your symptoms could mean until you speak with your medical team again. I know this is easier said than done but keeping your mind on other things might help.

If you find yourself stressing too much though and you feel that speaking to someone medically trained might help, our cancer nurses would be happy to chat with you over the phone.

    They're available on this phone number 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Once you know more come back and give us an update, we're thinking of you.

    Best wishes,

  • Preoperative appt today. I mentioned gp had referred me to rapid access chest clinic for possible angina (pain in both arms and legs) but the hospital have cancelled my referral. The nurse said the anaethetist may cancel my op until the heart issue is sorted. I am not worried about my heart and clearly the hospital are not either. The GP has not received a letter yet so cannot say why the referral was cancelled. I do not want my op cancelling because I am worried about all my gynae issues.  Now  I am so stressed. I may turn up at hospital on Tuesday and be sent home again. My new employees knows I am having a hysterectomy next week and are willing to wait for me to recover. Now all the plans can change. I cannot wait months for this op, wondering if it is cancer. As I sit here my body is reminding me there is a problem with a burning urethra, even after several lots of antibiotics and 3 months prophylactic antibiotics which I finish tonight. Tuesday can't come quick enough because now I am stewing about whether the op will take place. If my GP had ordered tests instead of assuming it is just a failed ablation without laying a finger on me, I would at least know if I am cancer free. I feel my concerns are not being taken seriously. I have spent the evening researching private gynae cancer tests locally. Would a hysteroscopy diagnose all types of gynae cancer or would I need separate tests for each type of cancer?  What do I do if the anaethetist does not want to operate but the chest clinic refuse to see me so I move no further forward? How do I get through the next few days? If I have got a heart problem, this will not help.

  • Hello Cat28,

Good luck with your pre-operative appointment today. It sounds like it may be helpful for you to talk things through with one of our nurses. Do give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - as Renata mentioned above, their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and they may have some helpful advice for you. They also have an Ask the Nurses topic area on the forum but it may take a few days for them to respond if you post in their topic area so the easiest way to get quick advice would be to give them a ring. They are very friendly!

I hope you manage to get through the next few days despite all the stress this is understandably causing you. Hopefully you will also hear from some of our forum members who have been in a similar situation.

    Best wishes,

  • The anaethetist was great and said he thought I was low risk so the op went ahead. Waiting to hear the results of histology now. Feeling far less anxious now I have had the hysterectomy.
