After treatment - no more

We've had treatment ie Radiotherapy and chemotherapy but now the oncologist has stopped as Dad too weak for more chemo. He has been placed at PS3 - I can't get an answer on what this means - I know OS is Overall Survival  but i'd like to know what 'PS3 can mean?

Anyone help please?

  • Hello CRB12,

I am sorry to learn about your dad's situation. This must be a difficult time for you and your family.

I am one of the nurses and as no one appears to have offered you any answers, I thought that I would try to help.

As I am seeing the terminology PS3 out of  full context there is a small possibility that I might be wrong. But I think that you are referring to performance status. Doctors use performance status as one of the criteria when they are planning treatment. Performance status goes from 0 to 4.

0 Active and able to carry out all pre disease activities with no restrictions

1 Restricted in strenuous activity.  But able to do most things

2 Up and about for most of the day can self care but unable to work

3 Capable of only limited self care and confined to be for about half of the day

4 Confined to bed or chair and cannot self care

This is only a very quick summary of performance status, but you may get some idea if this fits your dad's situation.

So get back to us if you have any other questions. If you would like to telephone our freephone number is 0808 800 4040.

    Kind regards,

    Jean

  • Thank you Jean that does fit. Dad is currently in hospital with poss water infection. We are talking to palliative team now as coming home to live with a hospital bed may be going out of the window quicker than we thought.

We go just day to day now.
