After effects of radiotherapy.

Hi everyone . I have T cell non hodgkin lymphoma diagnosed Oct 2017. I have had three weeks of radiotherapy ending on 23 March . Sailed through it at the time and felt really well but the past few days I am so tired and aching all over and feeling so weak. Also got stomach troubles. Is this normal please. Love to all going through this scary time. xxx

  • Yes it is,  hubby had twenty sessions and felt no ill effects but within a few weeks of finishing he went down hill.   Aches, muscle pains,  shoulder aches, skin thinning causing blisters when he rubbed it on the bed, shoes etc.   I wish we had known this but our Oncologist just shrugged her shoulders when we mentioned the arm/shoulder pain.   It turns out he was border line anemic causing muscle fatigue, folic acid has just kicked in after weeks of use.  Just keep in touch with your GP and get regular blood tests,  it's not in your mind as they seem to indicate.  If we had know this it would have saved a lot of pain.   Good luck to your getting the help you need.   Caz

  • Hi Caz. Oh thank you so much for replying to me. Get so worried about every little bump, ache and pain. Feel so low too. I'm not very brave so talking on here really helps. Hope your hubby and yourself are ok . Thanks again . Hugs x

  • Hi gloden,

Despite working with radio and radar for years, for some reason the seriousness of radiotherapy passed me by.

I had 10 sessions to my pelvic bone and never felt any effect. I was already severely fatigued so didn't notice any extra. My pain was well controlled by this time.

But, about 3 months later there were severe consequences. I've had ongoing bowel problems for so long I couldn't notice a difference in symptoms and woke one morning virtually incontinent.

I'd got radiation colitis and the blood supply to my sigmoid colon was compromised, causing sepsis. A case of operate or die.

Had I had a stem cell transplant, a normal treatment for myeloma, I'd not have survived the sepsis.

Be aware of bowel symptoms and your temperature and seek help sooner rather than later. Be aware also that there can be long term effects, possibly years after your treatment ends.

And on that happy note I'll wish you the best

    Regards

    Taff

  • Hi Taff. Thank you for your reply. I only had superficial radiotherapy on to the skin so didn't expect to feel like this. I had it on my stomach right side so maybe it's affecting the bowel. I have ibs anyhow.got pain up the right side under ribs and into back. Just don't need anything else so hope it all goes away soon. All the best to you and thanks again. It's good to talk on here with folks that understand where you are coming from. xx

  • I've always considered IBS to be a lazy diagnosis by doctors who can't be bothered to investigate properly.

  • Far from it. IBS is a diagnosis that should only be made after everything else has been ruled out.
