Advice please... painless enlarged lymph nodes

Hello all. I apologise for the long read but please bear with me, any advice would be greatly appreciated! I’m 25 and male by the way, just in case that’s important.

Im in a bit of a mess lately. I live abroad currently in Japan until the end of October on exchange from London. About half a year ago, I noticed my lymph nodes in right side of neck were all enlarged, I could count 5 (painless, slightly rubbery and somewhat moveable). I wasn’t sick or ill and had no other symptoms then. While 3 remained the same size, two slowly continued to get bigger over time. This alarmed me so six weeks ago I decided to go to the doctors.

Doctors in japan can be a bit old fashioned and don’t really like to be questioned. I went to two who didn’t even feel the nodes and just threw anti biotics at me. After taking two rounds I refused more, and my doctor just said “some foreigners aren’t used to Japan” as the explanation as to why I had them... totally useless and frustrating lol.

I started getting extremely exhausted two weeks ago. Needing several naps despite not having a taxing day at all. This alarmed me and my teacher encouraged me to go to an international hospital. Luckily there they did take me more seriously, and gave me a series of blood tests (all normal) and a CT scan. The CT scan revealed I have 2 upper cervical lymph nodes at 2.1cm long axis. And that four others in my right side are between 1cm and 1.5cm, which is considered normal range here (1.5cm is the cut off point apparently for this area of the neck). They mentioned that from what they could see, none were suspicious in their shape and that they don’t think I need to investigate any further. I asked why they are enlarged and not painful at all, and they had no answers.

Of course I’m happy but at the same time I’m thinking what else can I do? I don’t feel myself, very exhausted and some weight loss.

But are nodes at this size alarming ? What else could I do just to get more clarification? Any advice would be much appreciated

  • Hello vasfdd,

You have done the right thing in getting these looked into and I am glad that they took you more seriously at the international hospital and carried out additional tests. I think though if you are still worried, it might be a good idea to get yet another opinion.  You can find out more about this on this page.  I can imagine it is more difficult for you to do so whilst living in another country but try and see whether there is another specialist there you could talk to just to get reassurance. When you come back to the UK if you are still not feeling great, it could be a good idea also to book an appointment with your doctor here and discuss things in further detail with your GP.

I hope you are having a wonderful time in Japan! I bet it is a fascinating country and that the food is delicious :)

    Best wishes,
