Advice please

About 18 months ago I damaged the bottom of my foot.  I tried everything but it wouldn't heal. I visited my gp surgery, a podiatrist but nothing helped. Last year I asked to be referred to a dermatologist but when I contacted the hospital they told me that due to Covid-19 there would be a very long wait.

I developed a bacterial infection and yet again I went back to the doctors and was prescribed antibiotics.  I was lucky enough to have a small payout from my pension which I decided to use to see a private dermatologist.

Due to an allergic reaction to the antibiotics I rang the gp surgery again and explained that I intended to go privately and I was incredibly anxious and depressed.  I received a phone call yesterday asking me to go to the hospital to see the dermatologist.

When I saw her she said it looked like cancer and would speak to the foot surgeon and fast track me ASAP.  I was so shocked I couldn't speak.  I had breast cancer in 2016 and I am devastated that this has happened especially as it's been here for so long and I have constantly been told it was granulated tissue which they now think is SCC.

I have also been having pain in my knee and hip which I was told was a side effect of Letrozole.

Thank you for letting me vent.  I would just like to know if anyone has any advice I could use.

  • Hi Doglover60,

I'm so sorry to hear about the worry you now have, especially after suffering all these problems with your foot. I'm attaching a link to the British Association of Dermatologists website - this gives information about squamous cell carcinoma and it may help www.bad.org.uk/.../get-file.ashx

The good thing is that scc doesn't often spread (to the nodes) so hopefully it's been caught quickly and complete removal will cure it. The only addendum I would add to the link I've included is that the results timeline says 7 to 10 days - sadly due to Covid it's nearer 3 or 4 weeks now.

Although SCC is mainly caused by UV damage it's probably not the case with your foot. Having had an injury that hasn't healed may well be the cause.

I hope you get an excision appointment through very quickly and that the results bring you good news. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)
