Advice on switching consultants

Hi All

It could be either advice or reaffirmation that I need to change consultants.

Luckily I am in remission so not much to complain about but as this is for Lung Cancer and taking account age etc... then it's all about the monitoring process for any recurrence or new cancer developing.

On what I had read on this from the AMA compared to UK sources low dose CT scans are the advised way to go.  As I have full Bupa cancer coverage in the Spring I switched over from NHS to Bupa private which originally seemed the right thing to do.  However, the private consultant will only advise CT scans once per year which is what the NHS would have gone for anyway.  Plus the NHS had me in on a 3-month basis for a lung X-ray.  I also felt there was a lot more proactive communication from the NHS staff.

Although I have recently had the all-clear from the 1 year CT scan I had to nag at my consultant's secretary to get this information.   The current consultant very much feels like the NHS of old in that he is too important a person to be wasting time with a patient.

Do people think I should go back to Bupa and see about moving to a different consultant or whether I should just go back to the NHS service previously used?  I pay about £1K per year for Bupa membership and feel I should take advantage of it but at the moment it is not much of an advantage.

  • We dont have BUPA but I fell their real benefits are in getting a diagnosis faster, more flexibilty over hwne you are seen and pleasanter conditions in hospital. My nephew also get more physio than the NHS would provide. I'm somewhat biased against BUPA having heards ome horor stories of bad treatment and the NHS having to pick up the results. I'd probably ask to see a different consultant first then go back to the NHS if they are as bad.

  • Hi,

I gave up my private health insurance years ago but I do know, from other people's experience, that private health companies are great at the beginning of a health concern but their after care follow up service can be shocking. Ten years ago, when diagnosed Stage 3 melanoma, I asked my consultant if I would get the surgery done quicker on my private health insurance. She said no, it would still take the same amount of time and that the after care would be no better than the NHS provided. I totally believed her as she had been my dermatologist (NHS) for 13 years. She was correct, as the NHS care I have had since then has been second to none. If it was me, and there is very little advantage to going privately, I would go back to the NHS.

  • @anotheralias & Angie Thanks for the replies and comments. Well reasoned I'll get in touch with Bupa to see if I can see another consultant or I'll go back tot he NHS. Alasdair
