Advice on result times

I am 39 and have found a lump in one breast and saw  my gp this week. It is large 3cm I'd say - gp said 2cm I think but I think it is bigger. As I have a history of breast cancer in my family my gp has referred me to the 2 week wait clinic via the nhs which I got an appointment for there and then which he said would be better than using my private health care for testing as this nhs clinic has everything in one place so mamograms, scans and biopsy etc can all be done in one place. I am just wondering though if I go via the nhs route how long will it take to get the results? Has anyone looked into nhs verses private health care in terms of times to be seen and times for results to come back? Are there not many private drs for breast cancer / diagnosing? From memory this seemed to be what he suggested privately everything won't be in one place, there could be time taken to sort payments and there aren't many private drs in this area for the testing anyway.  If the lump is anything like cancer I've asked my private health care company and I can switch to them for treatment. Any advice would be fantastic as I want to know what this lump is ASAP. Sorry if I've not used the right terms this is all very new to me and something I'd not thought I'd be thinking about for a long time as I'm only 39...

  • Also genetic causes of breast cancer do not run in my family my mum had breast cancer which was caused by oestrogen and she did the genetic testing and she does not have that gene. Hence why I have never thought about the possibility of getting breast cancer at my age...

  • Hi

I am on the pathway due to problems with my bowel and within four days of being referred I had my CT scan and within eight days had my colonoscopy.  I have been told resukts will be two weeks.

I can not fault the speed , thoroughness and compassion Ive experienced with the NHS and as your GP has advised, the NHS have all the expertise under one roof.

It is horrid waiting for tests and results but I am so impressed with how.I have been treated and really feel I am being thoroughly looked after and my symptoms investigated.  In addition if your GP advises that private may not be able to treat you full cycle.I would follow his guidance.

I hope this helps and remember, the consultants in the NHS are the same you woukd see privately but the NHS cancer pathway commits to a two week process and I do not believe a.private hospital can make that same guarantee.

Good luck  and I hope this quickly just hecomes a bad memory.xx

  • Hi Caroline,

Sorry you're having to go through this! Haven't done much research but can share my experience in case it helps. I went to the doc with a breast lump last Monday, she said she'd refer me to the breast clinic and I got an appointment (cancellation) last Friday. It was a one-stop clinic so they were able to do mammograms, ultrasounds and biopsies on the day. All very efficient. The scans were looked at there and then and I think they usually have a pretty good idea of what the situation is from them. They'd be able to tell you if there was nothing to worry about. Unfortunately wait for biopsy results is about 10 days. I think I read somewhere that there would be a similar wait if you got biopsies done privately (I may be wrong).
If you do go to the NHS breast clinic I'm sure your consultant would be able to advise on going private if more treatment was needed.
I really hope it's good news for you, but if you do find yourself having to wait for results, you will find many sympathetic ears on this forum!

    Good luck xx

  • Thank you so much for your reply. That sounds reasonable regarding biopsy results and good to know they can give you an idea when you are there... I go on the 28th October as that seemed to be the earliest for the clinic x

  • Thank you for your reply x I think like you say I just need to trust the gp to know his stuff. I will ask when I go too if any of the doctors there also work privately and what they advise too - it all looks very good care from the nhs though from what you and others have said...
