Advanced metastatic adenocarcinoma of oesophagus

Hello

My dad was diagnosed with T3 oesophageal cancer a year ago. Has had chemotherapy, resection and chemo radiotherapy. Spent weeks struggling to eat and swallow with constant vomiting and eventually they pushed his follow up CT scan forward and found regrowth at the site of the resection, mets in his stomach with pleural fluids and ascites.

Plan was to try different chemo for symptom control but before he stated that he caught an infection and is currently in the High Dependency Unit being treated for sepsis.

I am feeling very lost and unclear as to what is going to happen. If he beats the infection will they still start chemotherapy? When we will know that the sepsis is no longer life threatening? How long will he wait to start treatment after that and what about the cancer growth in the meantime?

I think I know that his prognosis is poor and probably short. How do you cope with life alongside something like this when the timescales are so unclear?

My poor dad has gone from a fit and healthy guy to a shadow of himself in a year. He still remains positive somehow, but I’m just so sad for him.

  • Hello there

my heart goes out to you- with the exception of Sepsis you are describing pretty much the exact symptoms and disease progression of my husband.

theres nothing I can say to offer you any comfort other than to assure you your Dads medical team will make the decisions they feel are right for your Dad but you/your Dad may be put in a position of having to decide whether  to opt for quality over quantity of life. Keeping your dad comfortable and managing his symptoms will be paramount now.

PM me if you want to talk more

    good luck my dear x
