Advanced lung cancer, is this normal treatment or below par?

Hi there, il try and keep this as short as possible.  Starting from the beginning, back in October last year my step dad noticed a lump on his scalp, thought he’d been bitten by something so just ignored it. First week in nov it got bigger so went to drs and was prescribed antibiotics. The next day he was really ill so went to ooh thinking it was a reaction to the antibiotics. He was kept in and on 5th nov, diagnosed with lung cancer that had spread to his adrenal gland (at this point no connection has been made to the head lump). Fast forward a few weeks, the head lump is now bleeding daily, my mum is changing the dressings everyday at home. End of nov He sees a dermatologist who says the lump may also be cancer and on the same day He’s given a pet scan and told to expect the results within 48hrs and told chemo should start week before Christmas. By Christmas, he still hasn’t been told of the pet scan results, no chemo, and he still didn’t know what stage his cancer was actually at. (I found a letter saying t4 so I presume that’s stage 4) He eventually got his pet scan results last Monday (shows “something” in between his lungs and “something” in his neck) and told chemo would start 11th jan. he went in last Friday morning to start it but when they took his temp it was 40 degrees and heart rate was up to 170. Kept on a and e all day until a bed was found on coronary care where he remains today, still unable to control his temp and heart rate. Now this is where I don’t know whether there’s anyone I can ask for help, my mum went to visit him at 2:30 on sat after he’d been in there 24hrs to find his head dressing soaked through because no one had changed it. She went to the nurses station and they gave her a dressing to change it herself! When she undone it it was yellow and *** so she went for a nurse who was very blasé, considering he obviously has a raging infection somewhere and that’s staring her in the face!, “oh yeah, we might take a swab, and we might get someone to look at it Monday”!!. My mum changed the dressing again Sunday as again it hadn’t been done. Now the dr that was ment to look today says it’s not their department and wel have to wait til Thursday when the dermatologist takes a look. We’ve also found out his oncologist has left after Christmas  so don’t know who will be taking over. My mum and stepdad aren’t pushy people, but I have a 9 year old sister and 13 year old brother who face losing their dad, so if I can do anything to get these drs to try and treat him better I will, or is this normal to have no “rush” about them?! Sorry that was not short at all lol and apologies if I’ve done anything wrong, this is my first post.

  • Hi there I’m new too!

Sorry to hear about ur dad , my dad was also diagnosed with T4 lung cancer a few weeks ago. I’ve got two pieces of advice for you. NEVER worry about nagging people or chasing up appointments. I’ve been doing this for 6 weeks and I’m sure I’m getting on peoples nerves but I don’t care as they are dealing with my dad and as long as he’s getting the care he needs then that’s all that matters.secondly I would have a gentle but firm word with the ward sister outlining your concerns about the situation with your dads head. Not changing a dressing is basic and essential and asking a family member to do this, especially if infection is present, is unacceptable. I’m a fairly confident person and appreciate that some people may find being a ‘ nuisance ‘ difficult and embarrassing but PLEASE do challenge things in a positive way as this is ur dad they are dealing with. Luck and love To u and your family
