A vegan diet in hospital

Good morning my warrior friends. As some of you will know from my earlier rant I unfortunately picked up both sepsis and covid whilst attending my first chemo session.

Because of covid there was a long delay in being diagnosed and receiving treatment and I'm regrettably at stage 4 with inflammatory breast cancer that has spread to both lungs and liver.

So my lungs are struggling with asthma,  covid and sepsis. I'm very proactive and sought out lots of information. I put myself on a vegan diet as I felt that it would suit me best.

I'm in hospital and I am struggling to get fed. It's absolutely incredulous that in the 21st century a hospital cannot provide adequate nutrition for a recovering patient. I've been here since Thursday and as yet not received a single breakfast. When I spoke with the consultant yesterday I explained the situation and he was horrified and agreed to look into it. Lunch and tea arrived and the meals were the size of an under 10 s menu selection. I complained again and was given a banana.

I'm so ill. Stressed out to my absolute limit and having to fight to be fed. I just don't know what to do next.

Last night I was visited by one of life's angels. A nurse who had helped to care for me the previous night and saw that I received nothing to eat in the morning, went to Sainsbury's and brought me fresh plant based meals, cereal milk, cheese, crackers, yogurts and some treats. She's aware that I don't have any money but was so concerned about my welfare that she did this for me.

It's given me hope and I will definitely leave some money for her when I get out of here but at the end of the day the hospital is still failing anyone who doesn't eat animal products and it's so wrong and I'm yet again angry for the next person to be admitted and not receive adequate nutrition to regain a full recovery.

Rant over. Thanks to those of you who read this.

I shall continue on my quest to rid myself of infection in order to continue chemo next week.

Take care. Stay strong. Barb xx

  • Hope your I'dea works well for you. you want to check what your body needs to keep healthy and fight infection and things to what your actually putting in your body health wise vitamins and such or you might nead supplements because of vegetables only could leave you lacking something important depending on what your eating,

I've a couple of friends both vegan both have problems now and again, like i said at beginning hope it works well for you just be careful hate to hear a fighter like you struggling again.

So sorry didn't welcome you other time to the forum the club nobody wants to join.

And as you say it helps to talk and rant about things.

    Take care

    Billy

  • Thanks Billy.

Yes I also take lots of supplements and have talked with my oncologist about my diet and he was satisfied with it but wouldn't let me fast during chemo because it would take too much from me.
