6 weeks post liver resection & having right sided rib pain

Hi,

I’m 27 and six weeks ago had a liver resection for Cholangiocarcinoma. Over the weekend I started to develop a ‘bruise’ pain under my right ribs. It’s now more of a sharp pain and worse when I’m taking a breath in.

Has anyone else experienced this? Just wondering if it is anything to be concerned about?

Thanks in advance x

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Unfortunately, nobody on the forum is going to be able to tell you what it is. It probably does have a straightforward explanation. Such as you might have strained the muscles a bit, in that area. But to be on the safe side, do get a doctor to examine you soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Vanda

  • Hi Vanda,

    Thank you for your reply.

I’ve left a message for my liver nurse but I haven’t heard from her.

I just wondered if anyone else had experienced a similar thing post op. Whilst I’m waiting for a response from my nurse.

  • Hi Charlotte

I had surgery for ovarian cancer 10 months ago. From immediately post op I had pain around my right ribs as well as the expected low abdominal pain.

whilst the Lowe abdominal pain settled the pain around my right lower ribs has persisted.

I recently saw my specialist and he explained I had removal of the liver coronary ligament and omentectomy during my operation and the pain could be due to nerve damage.

I researched this on the internet and found out the coronary ligament is very near the nerve roots which supply the muscles between the lower ribs and can be damaged during surgery.

I have just had a ct scan to check forany recurrent cancer and am awaiting the result

obviously I don’t know what is causing your pain but this could be a possibility

  • I had liver resection nine weeks ago , and had stabbing pains on my right side, mainly where the drain had been taken out. Luckily the pain subsided.

I had a conversation with the post care team, and mentioned that my stitches felt tight. They suggested rubbing Vaseline on the wound. I had no Vaseline, so used a little hand cream and massaged it along the wound site. An hour later, I had severe stabbing pains on my right wound site, and for a week now have severe pain whe I cough , when I sit up in bed etc. The pain is 10/10. I am waiting for comment from my specialist nurse.
