What can I learn at a Legacy event?

What do Cancer Research UK do?

Our aim is to reduce the number of deaths from cancer through research. We focus on four key areas – prevention, diagnosis, developing new treatments as well as optimising current ones to make them even more effective. Coming along to a Legacy event is the perfect way of getting to grips with the research we’re doing, and understanding in simple terms, how your local community is benefiting from our science.

Where does Cancer Research UK money go?

One of the questions we’re asked most often is how we spend the donations we receive. For every £1 donated, 80p is used to beat cancer (the remaining 20p goes towards raising funds for the future).

The majority that we spend each year goes towards our ground-breaking research. We fund research into all types of cancer – over 200 types - and the amount we spend varies year to year as we don’t allocate all of our resources ahead of time.

At our events, you can hear from the very people behind our science how we fundt he best science that stands the best chance of making a difference for people affected by cancer.

Why should you support Cancer Research UK?

Our supporters come from all walks of life, from different parts of the country, from different backgrounds. Many have a personal connection to cancer and been affected by it - either through a friend, a family member, a loved one. What unites our supporters is a passion to see more people surviving their cancer for longer. That means more time, more special moments, and more memories they can have with their loved ones. We hope by coming to a legacy event, you away inspired to help us make a life-saving difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Cancer Research UK expect me to donate or ask me personal details about my Will on the day?

We will not ask for any donations on the day, although we hope our events inspire supporters to consider leaving a legacy gift. The events are to thank our supporters and show how each donation is making a difference. It’s a great opportunity to share our progress and explain how we’re investing in a future where no-one has to fear cancer.

Can I bring a guest or do I have to come on my own?

You are more than welcome to bring a guest or come on your own if you wish. Our event staff and Community Legacy Managers work hard to ensure that you'll be greeted by a friendly atmosphere and comfortable surrondings.

Is the venue accessible?

The majority of our events take place in venues where there is good accessibility access. If you have any specific accessibility requirements we should be aware of, or have any concerns, please get in touch with your local Community Legacy Manager.

Are these events costly for Cancer Research UK?

Thanks to the generosity and support of many venues, we’re able to host a legacy event at a very low cost. We know how important it is to thank our supporters and show them how their legacy gift can make a difference.

What happens if I’m unable to attend?

If you're unable to attend an event, please let your local Community Legacy Manager know as soon as possible so we can offer your reserved place to someone else. They can also suggest alternative events if you'd like to come to.
