Accessibility statement

We want to make our website as accessible and easy-to-use for as many people as possible. We’re committed to continually refining user experience for everyone.

We’re complying with UK web accessibility laws as defined by the Equality Act of 2010 and working towards meeting the international Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 level AA accessibility standard

How we’re improving accessibility

Website review

We’re in the process of assigning an accessibility service provider to review all Cancer Research UK websites. An accessibility audit will help us ensure they are WCAG 2.2 level AA compliant.

New content management system

We’re currently moving all Cancer Research UK websites onto a new content management system. The system will influence how we plan, create and manage content, to improve accessibility. We’re continuously reviewing and evaluating our digital content to remove accessibility barriers.

PDFs

We’re working towards WCAG 2.2 level AA and PDF/UA standards for all PDFs containing cancer information. These are available in different formats upon request.

We aren’t working alone

We've worked with people and organisations internally and externally to help us improve visual and verbal inclusion and accessibility. We’re also including disabled people in our user research to ensure as many people as people can use our website.

Our website and accessibility

Despite our best efforts to ensure accessibility, we know some parts of the cancerrearchuk.org website aren’t fully accessible.

  • Text and images will not reflow in a single column when you change the size of the browser window. This doesn’t meet the WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.10 (Reflow).

  • You can’t modify the line height or spacing of text. This doesn’t meet the WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.12 (Text Spacing).

  • Most older PDF documents aren’t fully accessible to screen reader software. The accessibility regulations don’t require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services.

  • Older videos don’t have captions. This does not meet the WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.2.4 (Captions). The accessibility regulations don’t require us to fix time-based media or other documents published before 23 September 2020 if they’re not essential to providing our services.

  • Some of our online forms, carousels and accordions are difficult to navigate using just a keyboard. This doesn’t meet the WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.1.1 (Keyboard).

  • The alternative text on images isn’t always suitable. This doesn’t meet the WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.1.1 (Non-text Content).

  • The contrast on text and images is sometimes poor. This doesn’t meet the WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.1 (Use of Colour).

  • Sometimes our heading hierarchy is inconsistent. This doesn’t meet the WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships).

  • We’re updating or replacing any pages that include accessibility barriers.

Content outside of accessibility regulations

Content that is generated by external websites isn’t related to Cancer Research UK and doesn’t sit within our control. As such, it may not be compliant with the accessibility regulations.
