Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need a Will?
A Will tells everyone what you want to happen to your 'estate' (this is your money, possessions and property after you die). If you don’t leave a Will, then the law will decide what happens to your estate – and this might not be in line with your wishes.
Why is a Will important?
A Will is important if you have children or family who financially depend on you, or if you want to leave something to a cause you care about. It can also give you peace of mind, knowing that your family and friends will not be subjected to any expense or complex issues that may result from intestacy (if you do not make a Will).
What information is needed for a will?
- Personal details such as your full name, date of birth, current address, relationship status and names and dates of birth of any children you have.
- Your money, possessions and property - you'll need to consider what assets (items of value) you own, including those in your sole name and owned in joint names.
- Your beneficiaries – who you want your estate to go to when you die.
Do you write all Wills for free?
Most simple Wills are free using our Free Will Service. But, as a charity, we have to be very careful how we spend our money, so we have fixed fees for the service agreed with participating solicitors. You may be liable for any costs if you exceed this limit. We recommend you speak to your solicitor about your needs before using the service.
