Lauren, Cancer Campaigns Ambassador

“Without advances in cancer treatments my mum wouldn't be here.”

After taking part in Race for life and helping out at various Cancer Research UK events in her area, Lauren decided that she wanted to do more to help, and joined us as a Cancer Campaigns Ambassador in May, 2014.

“Cancer has affected quite a few members of my family and I’ve seen friends lose family members. I wanted to do something to help, and the diagnosis of my mum last year reiterated this. It means so much.”

What Lauren does

“My role is really exciting! It involves lobbying MP’s, promoting new Cancer Research UK campaigns, recruiting support for campaigns in local media and raising awareness the community.

I had limited experience with campaigns. I’d helped out with a group called DAWN (Domestic Abuse Women’s Network) when I was younger and done quite a lot of volunteering, as but other than that I was pretty new to the role! The Campaigns team have been really supportive and have provided me with loads of opportunities from the outset.”

Lauren’s volunteering highlights

“The best part of volunteering is really being able to see the positive impact that you’ve made. It’s been so inspiring to meet the dedicated people behind the innovative research and treatments, and taking on a volunteer role with Cancer Research UK really gives you an insight into how much vital work they do and why they do it.

I’ve also had the chance to see how the UK’s leading cancer research charity is run. I’ve gained invaluable experience in campaigning, communicating effectively, lobbying MP’s and promotion. It’s given me the opportunity to put the skills from my Politics degree into practice!”

Any advice for anyone thinking about volunteering?

“I would say go for it! It’s genuinely been the most rewarding set of experiences. I’ve had the chance to lobby MP’s, change legislation and campaign on behalf of my community. I’ve set up a blog, created press releases, took part in TV/ radio interviews, attended mass lobby days at parliament and visited research centers.

Being a Cancer Campaigns Ambassador is rewarding, ambitious and eye-opening - join me on the team!”
