Cancer Won't Wait

On 6 May 2021, elections are taking place for the Scottish Parliament, the Welsh Parliament / Senedd Cymru, and for 8 Metro Mayors across England, alongside regular local council elections. These are the first elections since COVID-19 pandemic hit, making it an important opportunity to put cancer at the centre of the political agenda, ensuring that it is a top priority for new governments and mayors for the next five years.

COVID-19 has had a huge impact on cancer services across the UK. Worryingly, there is now a significant backlog for diagnoses and treatment, with 40,000 fewer people starting life-saving cancer treatment in 2020 than in 2019. The pandemic will not only dominate the election – including changing election campaigning – but it will also be a major issue for the lifespan of the next Scottish Government, Welsh Government, and Metro Mayors.
