Zoladex injection for breast cancer

Hi- I was just wondering if anyone has taken zoladex following breast cancer treatment? I finished my chemo and radiotherapy late last year and have been taking tamoxifen since Oct but my oncologist also started me on zoladex injections nearly 2 weeks ago and I've had a pretty heavy period for about 6 days now ( despite not having periods since my chemo started last year) does anyone know if this is normal?

also I've read that there is no benefit to having both zoladex and tamoxifen together so not sure why I need both but has anyone else had this?
thankyou

  • Hello amandajane25,

Well done on finishing your treatment last year! I think it would be worth talking to your medical team about this heavy period you have had for 6 days and whether this is linked to the Zoladex injections. I've had a look on our website for information on possible Zoladex side effects and having a period doesn't appear to be  listed as one of them - in fact on the contrary, on rare occasions it can cause periods to stop altogether as you can see on this page. So it would be a good idea to mention this bleeding to your doctor and whether it is to be expected. You could at the same time ask why you have been given both Zoladex and Tamoxifen together and whether this is something that is commonly done.

Hopefully you will hear from some of our other ladies here who have also been on Zoladex and Tamoxifen and they will be happy to share their story with you. Our nurses are also always happy to answer questions you may have. You can ring them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm so don't hesitate to give them a call if you feel you would like to talk to them about all this.

  • Ahhhh thank you lucie - I'll ask next time I go for my injection, thanks for your help x

  • Hello amandajane25,

You're most welcome! Just wanted to add I just spotted another lady on the forum [@Woollylamb]‍  who is having monthly Zoladex injections as well as on Tamoxifen. You can see her latest post here. She might be able to shed some light on the reasons for this Zoladex/Tamoxifen combination and share her experience with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi

I am due to have my first zoladex in a couple of weeks. So the discussion with my oncologist is about belt and braces and small changes can win the race. I also havent had a period since I started chemo so will be interesting to see what side effects I have, I would defo mention it to your oncologist. So because of my age (43) they want to push me into early menopause because my cancer was oestrogen fed and this will stop the oestrogen being produced.  I will then have zoladronic acid to strengthen my bones and also prevent any cancer cells getting in there. Will you be having zoladronic acid?

  • Hi- thanks for your reply- yeah mine is for e rly menopause I'm assuming as I'm 33 but he hasn't said too much about the injection to me - just that we would "see how it goes" he hasn't mentioned the acid to me either but I'm seeing him again in may so I'll ask about it then - let me know how your injection goes and if you have any side effects

hope all goes good - thanks again

  • Hi

I have been on both zoladex and tamoxifen since June 2017.
I had lumpectomy in Feb 2017, 6 rounds of chemo then radiotherapy. Up to now had very little side effects. It has pushed me through menopause early so I get hot flushes and some joint pain, periods stopped after first chemo and not come back. I have put on weight but that's something I will just have to deal with. I feel grateful I'm still here X

    hope this helps.

  • Hi amanda

Like you I'm too 33 year finished chemotherapy and radiotherapy at start of March this year , was put on tamoxifen byt my consultant said it's very common because of age and healthy ovaries for periods to return within 6months which hello mine has just started again (thought I was getting away with these) so he said they would give me that injection if returned.  Obviously my initial reaction was I panicked and thought the medication isnt working but I think it's very common in younger women.

Ps I hope you have sorted your problem out now.

  • Just go for it

zoladex for 4.5 years now 6 to go ..... and it has worked

  • Hi I have started experiencing bleeding on zoladex and was wondering if you had any insight to why it occurs?

  • Hi

I wonder if you ever got any response to this? I'm on zoladex (been on it for nearly a year) and had a period this week. Had my last zoladex injection about 23 days before. I wonder if anyone else experienced this. My oncologist seemed puzzled. They suggested to have zoladex every 25 days instead of every 28days. And they swopped my anastrazole to tamoxifen.

    Thank you
