Worried I may have skin cancer

12 Apr 2019 10:16

I had a growth in my leg appear literally overnight, no bumps or knocks or anything. I saw the nurse at my surgery, as I couldn’t get an appointment with a GP who said it definitely wasn’t eczema, psoriasis, ringworm and he didn’t know what it was. He gave me a topical steroid cream to use three times a day but told me to return if I notice “significant” changes.  In the last two days, it looks angrier and feels sore.  I very worried as I’ve never had anything like this before and google is making me ill.  Does anybody have any experience of anything similar?

Worried I may have skin cancer

Hello Mabelrose and thanks for your post

I'm sorry that you are worried about a a growth on your leg.

You tried to send us a picture of it. Our system does not allow us to download attachments,so we are unable to accept pictures. But even if we could,we are unable to diagnose you. This is because we are a research organisation and not a hospital. We do not directly employ any specialists who can offer a medical opinion to individual people.

It's possible that the growth on your leg is a mole.Moles are common but they should always be checked out if they change shape or colour. This does not always mean that anything serious is wrong but they should be examined just to be on the safe side. The best thing to do is to see your GP and let them have a look at the mole. They are very experienced at looking at skin conditions. They will be able to examine you and decide whether you need to go for any further tests. Although this can seem frightening, in most cases the symptoms will be caused by something else other than cancer. But it is always sensible to get any problems checked out just to be sure.

We have some information on moles that should be checked out urgently by clicking here.

I hope this helps. If you want to talk to one of the nurses, you can call us on 0808 800 4040, we are here Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Best wishes,
