Worried about lymphoma

Hi guys,

So I'm worried about lymphoma and not sure if I should push my doctor to take me seriously. Any advice or thoughts would be great. Here's the back story-

I am a 22 year old female. I noticed a lump on the left side of my neck back in December. I wasn't I'll but had a cough so put it down to that. I went to my doctor about missing my periods for a few months. She ran blood test which came back abnormal (high iron/high white cells and abnormal thyroid) , I waited six weeks and went back for more. Second time I was told they are fine but I have been referred to a hormone specialist next month. My symptoms are fatigue (need at least one nap to get through the day) , moodiness is becoming a big problem noticed by my friend's (putting that down to possible hormone issues) but it's the lump I'm worried about, it's six months later and it's still here. Measuring at around 1.3cm , not sore , movable, wouldn't notice it unless I pull my hair back then it's a disabled lump. I don't feel I'll with cold/flu etc. I don't feel my doctor took me seriously about it. She checked my neck and said yes you actually have loads of swollen ones. I can feel more but none as big as this one. She said you should wait six weeks for it to go down but I am discouraged to ask her again. I will ask the hormone specialist about it but any opinions would help. Like if it was lymphoma would more symptoms have developed by now?

Regards

  • Hello! I have exactly the same in my neck on the right hand side. I went to the doctors in February and they said the same to me ‘you could be coming down with something see how it is in 2-4 weeks’. To be honest it took that long to get an appointment I haven’t bothered since. It’s still there and feels the same size. Worried about what it could be.

I do think in your case maybe ask to see a different doctor? Can you see it when you look at your neck?

  • Hello and thanks for posting on the forum,

I am sorry to hear that you are feeling anxious.  I can understand that it is worrying when you don't have an explanation for your symptoms.

There can be many reasons for swollen lymph glands and not all of them lead to a diagnosis of cancer.  Your doctor is looking at your other symptoms to rule out other possible causes.  You talk about being tired with mood changes.  Your GP would have assessed your lymph node and whether it had increased in size.  Lymph glands can go up and down when someone is feeling run down and you may find that they do go down on their own.

The NHS have written some information on swollen lymph glands which you can look at here

Sometimes it is not always straight forward waiting to find out what is wrong.  I would wait and see what the hormone specialist say to see if they can come back with any explanation as to why you are getting your symptoms.  Just try and take one step at a time.

Once you have seen the specialist if your symptoms have not gone away then do go back to your GP. I am sure they will carry on trying to get to the bottom of what is going on.

I hope that they find out what is going on soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best Wishes,

    Catherine
