  • Hello,

Thank you for posting a question. I am sorry to learn about your situation.

I am sorry that we did not get back to you sooner, but it can sometimes be a couple of days before we are able to respond to questions on the forum. I believe that you have now seen the specialist and they will probably have explained things to you and told you how your situation should be managed.

Often from an ultrasound scan and a fine needle aspiration doctors will get enough information to know if a thyroid lump is cancerous or not. But sometimes the results come back as slightly abnormal and this can present doctors with a bit of a dilemma. When the cells are not quite normal, but not very abnormal, it is not possible to know for sure if anything serious is wrong. So I think that your specialist may want to do more tests. They may suggest waiting a while to see if anything changes. I would imagine that this is very stressful for you.

At the moment I will not say anymore because things may have moved on after your appointment, but do get back to us if you have any other questions. If you would like to telephone our freephone number is 0808 800 4040. We are here from Monday to Friday between the hours of 9am to 5pm.

    Kind regards,

    Jean

    Hi Mommyk,

A very warm welcome to Cancer Chat. I am so sorry to hear about your quandry. I lost my mum to breast cancer in 1997. She developed metastases in her liver, lungs, brain and bone in her final year. I have had two bouts of breast cancer since then - the first was 8 years ago and the second 7. Like you, I was terrified, as I had cared for her to the end. Fortunately, in the interim, great strides have been made in the treatment and aftercare of cancer.

It is always worrying when you don't get a definite result, but is not an uncommon occurrence. All you can do is to look on the bright side, that you haven't developed cancer as yet. Sadly, this doesn't mean that you will never succumb, so, as nuse Jean has said, your consultant is likely to do further tests to ensure that you stay clear. If this is done regularly, you should catch it at an early stage even if you are unlucky enough to fall prey. The earlier you catch cancer the better the outcome usually is.

I hope for your sake, that you never get a positive result, but do keep checking.

Please let us know how things progress. We are always here for you whenever you want to talk.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
