What to expect from breast clinic appointment

Good morning,

Hope everyone is well.

I've recently found a lump In my right breast and after a visit to the doctor they have reffered me to the Breat clinic urgently under the two week wait.

I have my appointment next Thursday 7th July.

I wondered if anyone could give me an idea of what to expect at the appointment? I'm feeling so anxious about it so I thought I would reach out.

Thank you in advance for any replies

  • Hello Gemma-G and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

I can imagine this is an anxious time for you as you are waiting for your breast clinic appointment. Only a few days to go now before you are seen at the breast clinic and I hope that you will hear from other members here who have been to the breast clinic before and that they will come and share their experience with you. It does help to talk to others who have been in a similar situation before and who have been seen at the breast clinic.

While waiting for other members to come and share their story, I thought I would share with you this information from the Breast Cancer Now website on what to expect at a breast clinic appointment. I hope it will answer some of the questions you may have and that you will hear from some of our lovely ladies who have been through every single step of the process before.

I hope everything goes well at your appointment on Thursday.

    Best wishes,

  • I would advise you to take someone with you to your appointment. They can see the dr with you. Write down any questions you need answers to they're happy to answer all that they can. I usually have a mammogram and depending on the results it may be followed by an ultrasound biopsies are usually taken during the ultrasound.
You see he dr again for the results  lt can take a while to go through the clinic

  • hi Gemma I went over a year ago and my lump was a cyst that they drained I did have a tumour but lumps can also be cysts, you have a mammogram which I don't think hurt then maybe a 3d mammogram to look more closely.  I then was told to wait and had an ultrasound which is painless like a baby scan and a biopsy.  I had to wait thrn for the biopsy results and have a mri scan a few weeks later. I was there nearly 2 hours but the staff are usually lovely and explain things.

I am now cancer free and fully recovered after surgery and radiotherapy.

I hope this helps, don't worry they are very nice staff and caring.

message me if you need any further advice.

    All the best

  • Hi,

tjought I would give you my account from my visit a couple of weeks ago.

    I can't fault the lady's one bit!

my appointment was at 9 and I walked in and was seen straight away. First a examination from the consultant and students (the students also did a little fact finding work sheet with me the usual do you have symptoms and what meds are you on etc)

then I waited a little and got sent for a ultrasound. They had previously given me a gown to wear so the boobs are easily get able.

because of my age the ultrasound was first option.

after the ultrasound they then gave me a mammogram, which I waited around for (not too long about 20 mins)

THAT was painful I'll be honest. But it's barable and worth it so just dig deep for bravery it's just pain for a few seconds and then over with.

they told me there and then they didn't find anything so needed to refer me for breast  mri which need to be done at the right time if your cycle lucky for me this was next day!!!

all in all I was at clinic from 9-1 and everyone was so kind.

    i hope this helps.

    good luck!

  • hi gemma

your welcome I didn't find the mammogram too bad at all but do have bigger boobs, they could tell straight away I had a tumour but had a cyst which is none cancerous and normal so yours could  be that try not to worry but consultant and ladies very helpful. they didn't even have to take my breast off went through my nipple so still have a not bad set of boobs lol.

if you need any other help let me know but they know what there doing I am fully recovered I hope its negative and you will be OK.

    all the best.
