Waiting for bladder cancer diagnosis

hi

This is the first time I have posted on the forum...i have recently had a scan that showed and abnormality in in my bladder and am now waiting for a cystoscopy... does this mean I have bladder cancer ?

My symptoms are passing urine a lot .. burping passing stools a lot.. pain in lower left side and upper and lower abdomen ...I was convinced I had IBS! But my doctor wanted to be cautious so referred me to a urologist ..I am in shock re this ... any advice would be greatly appreciated ?

  • Welcome to the forum RedB although I'm sorry about what's been found on your scan.

Unfortunately no-one here will be able to say what this means but your doctor can so do be sure to have a chat with them as they'll be able to work through this with you and hopefully put your mind at ease.

Our cancer nurses are available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m if you'd like to talk things through with them as well.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi REDB.

    Welcome to the forum.

I was diagnosed with very early bladder cancer around Easter 2019 and I had a simple operation (TURBT) to remove the cancer a few weeks after diagnosis.  So far, I'm ok, but I'm well aware that I'm due a repeat cystoscopy any time now.

Finding an abnormality doesn't definitely mean you have bladder cancer, but of course it's always a possibility.  I had no symptoms, other than a single episode of passing blood and I had cancer.  Yet some 30+ years ago my father had all manner of symptoms which turned out to be a bladder fistula. That was not cancer and was cured by surgery.

Modern MRI and CT scanners are marvellous, but no one scan can reveal all the information a doctor needs. Until you have the cystoscopy, there's no way of knowing what it may find.  I know it's difficult not to worry, but at least should know the result immediately.

Please let us know how you get on.  Let's hope it's nothing too serious.

  • Hi, this is my first post too and I'm in a similar boat - I've been referred to urology and am having a flexible cystoscopy tomorrow.

It's my understanding that a cystoscopy can look for lots of different problems including bladder cancer but also other things like bladder stones. But the not knowing is really hard.

Have you got a date for your cystoscopy?

My symptoms are blood in my urine, needing to go a lot including at night, leaks and a bit of abdominal pain.

  • Hi, I am waiting too and am terrified.

Had my cystoscopy last week which the doctor said showed no sign of cancer, but now she wants me to have a CT Scan, which is in a few days. Ultrasound radiologist said my kidneys were fine, as did my GP when she ordered blood tests on them,. So I am wondering what they are looking for.Just convinced there's something wrong.

I was in hospital for something different this morning, and the consultant read my notes and inferred from them that I had been diagnosed with bladder cancer. I said that I was being investigated but had not yet had a diagnosis. Now that has really put the wind up me and I am scared stiff. Can't concentrate, can't think straight and am so worried.

  • hi

I dont have a date yet but tomorrow  it will be two weeks since they said I was being fast tracked for the cystoscopy... i have tried calling them today..no answer so left a message

I had a scan that showed a legion in my bladder so thats why they want to do thesystoscopy.  . But waiting is stressing me out !!! Yes a cystoscopy  can show many things

How long did you wait for your cystoscopy  date ?

My symptoms are similar to yours except I have pain in my left side near my hip bone too

Let me know how you get on tomorrow ..thinking of you xx

  • Really sorry to hear that! Really hope you get a date soon.

I got the date straight away but I think that was because it was haematuria which is emergency referral or something.

    thank you xxx

  • Ahh ok ..where are you based ?

Good luck ..kerp me updated ..thinking of you x

  • I had a cystoscopy yesterday.  I had an epidural and I didn't feel anything below my waist  which was heaven as I have been in chronic pain for weeks.

The worst part in my humble opinion was the work involved in setting up and having the epidural. Please believe me this is my experience of the epidural as other people may have different  views.

The procedure took about 20 minutes. After being taken to recovery for 20 minutes, so that I could have pre op and ger some feeling back in my legs.

Back on the ward, I felt a plaster on my lower back.. A nurse explained that this was a blood patch. That was it. Does anyone know how and when this is removed as  I don't know when it comes  off - do take it off myself or is it a doctor's job ?

    Thank you so much

    Chris

  • I'm in Oxfordshire, how about you? Really hope you get a date soon.

Sorry to hear that chris-bug - do you have a phone no for the hospital or could you ask your gp surgery?

  • I am in Essex ... i called the PALSCteam at the hospital today ..they are trying to help ..i also left a message eith my consultants secretary abd eill call her back tomorrow...i just thought I would have the appointment within two weeks !!

And they may want me to be tested for  COVID too...anyway good luck and stay in touch ..i will be thinking of you  xx
