Urgent Clinic referral

10 Oct 2018 22:24

So I went to the doctors a few weeks ago because of pain in my breast and she found what she described as 'prominent' breast tissue, two lumps in my left breast. She told me not to worry but said she was going to refer me urgently to the clinic. But naturally all I've done is worry. I've got to have a mammogram or ultrasound and see the consultant breast surgeon. I'm worried sick Sad

Hi Sophie,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am so sorry to hear about the lumps that your GP found in your breast, but I am glad to hear that she has referred you to the breast clinic. You usually get your initial appointment within 2 weeks of referral.

Once at the appointment your breasts will be examined and you may also get an ultrasound and/or mammogram and biopsy. The results of these tests are usually back within about a week. At this point you will be told the type of cancer you have and what stage it is.

It is only natural that you will worry. Most of us do. You can find yourself crying a lot. Let the tears flow, as they are a good release valve. You may also find that your emotions are all over the place.

There really is nothing to worry about at this appointment. The mammogram can be slightly uncomfortable, the ultrasound is totally painless.

Of every 10 people referred to the breast clinic only 1 will have cancer, so here's hoping that you are one of the lucky nine!

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

Kind regards,

Jolamine xx

Hi Sophie,

Sorry to hear about the reasons for you posting. Just wanted to say that I'm in a similar boat to you, so I can empathise - GP found a lump in my breast after I visited him regarding an inverted nipple and an armpit lump. He referred me urgently to breast clinic and now I'm in that dreaded limbo land of worry. Everybody I've spoken to says this by far is the worst part.

Can I ask when your appointment is? Mine is on the 18th. If you'd like, feel free to drop me a private message on here and maybe we can keep each other updated.

Fingers crossed it'll be good news for you.

Hi Raztrix

Thank you for your reply. My appointment is on the 16th, so thankfully not much longer to wait. I'm only 27 as well so THAT hadn't even crosses my mind. I've only told a few close friends and of course, my Mum who is being amazing.

If I feel the need to drop you a message after my appointment then I will, so thank you for that. By all means let me know how you get on, if you want to.

Much love. Xxx

Hi Raztrix,

You are quite correct  - this is one of the worst stages of your cancer journey. Fortunately you only have another week to wait, but that probably feels like a lifetime just now.

Try to keep yourself as busy as possible in the meantime and, to resist consulting Dr Google. Not all sites are properly researched and, you can end up scaring yourself even more for no particular purpose.

I do hope that all goes well for you on 18th. I shall be thinking of you then.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

Kind regards,

Jolamine xx

I feel how you feel I went to the doctor's with a painful lump 3 weeks ago and she found a further two in the same breast, she gave me anti biotics to try as I presumed the one I had found was a cyst, I went back to my doctor's on Monday to say the lumps still there an she referred me for urgent appointment which has came today for the 23rd. I'm booked in for a ultra sound scan an 3 biopsys really not looking forward to this appointment as I didn't expect a biopsy at well x

Hi Sophie

I'm in the same limbo boat as you I also go to hospital for tests on the 16th.

I'm older than you at 46 and history of breast cancer in the family so I'm expecting the worst .

I have 2 children 19 and 11 but as it stands at the moment I've not told them as until I have news either way

Fingers crossed for you

Hi Roberts,

I am glad that you returned to your GP when the antibiotics didn't make any difference. An ultrasound and biopsies are fairly normal tests for a first visit to the breast clinic. These help to diagnose whether or not cancer is present and what stage it is.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer, the first in 2010 and the second in 2011. I have also had a few scares. On each occasion I have had these tests and none of them were particularly sore.

I shall be thinking of you on 23rd and hope that nothing untoward is found.

Please stay in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

Kind regards,

Hi Icclemunchkin,

I am sorry to hear that you are in the same boat and hope that your tests on 16th will not find anything untoward.

I also have a history of cancer in the family and thought the worst when I first found a lump. Fortunately, my cancer is rare and not too aggressive, so I was quite perplexed when I found another lump the following year. This turned out to be the same type of cancer as I had originally and, was still stage 1, with no lymph node involvment.

There is no point in telling your children until you know exactly what you are dealing with. Your 11 year old probably only needs a very simple explanation.

Thinking of you.

Please stay in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

Kind regards,

Hi Roberts,

This is good news. The less time you have to wait the better, as this is always such a stressful time. Having your appointment brought forward is nothing to worry about, if anything rejoice at the fact that you have 2½ weeks less of waiting and worry.

The tests that you mention are all perfectly routine. It will probably take another week before you get the results of these tests back.

I shall be thinking of you on Tuesday and hope that all goes well.

Kind regards,

Jolamine xx

Hi Jolamine

Thanks for your reply tomorrow is d day and can say today I'm more scared than I have been in the last 2 weeks.

My eldest came home from uni at weekend and it was so hard not to tell her as it's always been me and her against everything(single parent) it even caused an argument between me and my partner as he thinks I should just tell her (his actual words) I don't think he understands it's not just a case of telling her with the family history.

The brca1 gene has been found in the family which at the moment is meaning 2 of my family members have had recall resulting in hysterectomy and double mastectomy which my daughter is fully aware of so me just telling is not an option.

In my head in expecting the worse outcome tomorrow as I'm sure many do just want out of this limbo
