Unexplained bruising, blood tests OK

Hi,

Hope someone has some help and advice.

Im a 34 year old male, in good health until the past 18 month, when I started getting unexplained joint pain and my mental health took a nose dive.

About 8 week ago a bruise appeared on the inner side of my left upper arm, extending from my armpit.

At one point a bright right spot about the size of a 5p appeared next to the bruise, then went leaving a mark the same dark colour as the bruise.

The bruise has not changed colour, there's no pain, no previous injury.

I have had my blood tested for everything possible 3 times, each time it is good.

Ive had ongoing joint and bone pain that the GP has put down to stress.

I'm at my wits end, my GPs dont want to know, just keep repeating that my blood and bone profiles are good.

I'm fatigued constantly, my mental health is shot and they are just lumping everything on that.

I'm a fit healthy lad, I've gone from running half marathons to struggling to get out of bed.

  • Welcome to the forum mpy2184 although I'm really sorry to read what you're going through.

I can't begin to imagine how frustrating this must be, especially when you feel like you're not being listened to or taken seriously. I know it'll be tough but if you're not happy with the answers you've got so far then do keep on at them until you are. Hopefully some of our members will be along soon to offer their support and advice as well.

I hope you're able to get to the bottom of this soon.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi, how are you feeling now? Did you ever discover the reason behind your bruising and bone pain? I’m going through something similar at the moment and like you my bloods are okay (apart from raised immunoglobulin which they tell me js non specific) was just wondering how you got on and if you are feeling better?

  • Hi,

Unexplained bruising is one of the symptoms of multiple myeloma, as is bone pain. There is a type of myeloma, non-secretory, where the usual sign of excess blood protein does not occur. Sometimes protein can be found in the urine and not in the blood.

I'm not a doctor and do not presume to diagnose but it might be worth mentioning myeloma to your GP.

I had various symptoms, including unexplained bruising for over a year before I was diagnosed.

Hope it turns out to be nothing.

    Regards

    Taff

  • Hi Taff,

Thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear your diagnosis took so long and I hope you are okay now. The gp has tested my urine for multiple myeloma and it was clear. There is a slight swelling on the shin of my leg which is causing me the most pain. Its not tender to touch and doesn’t feel muscular. It feels like the pain is in my bones. It’s been like this since February but getting gradually worse. I also have pins and needles and numbness in my leg and arm along with several other symptoms since February. The gp doesn’t think any of my symptoms are related and it’s driving me crazy. I’ve been referred to a neurologist and a muskoskeletal specialist now so I guess it’s just a waiting game. Thanks again for your reply

  • Hi Young_mum,

Am doing ok, just started my 3rd cycle of chemo after I relapsed.

As well as my bruising that was ignored and treated as nothing important, I had two musculoskeletal consultants tell me my hip pain was actually caused by mechanical back pain. It was in fact, a rather large plasmacytoma in my iliac bone. Fist-sized. A recent lump on the head that was probably nothing, is now a 30mm hole that goes right through my skull.

    Hope you get sorted soon.

  • Oh gosh I’m so sorry to hear that. Just goes to show that sometimes these specialists do get things wrong. Wishing you all the best with your chemo, hope you make a full recovery. Thank you again for taking the time to reply, Becky

  • Taff- a long time has passed, but I'm wondering how you are now?

I stumbled across this post after googling "unexplained bruising normal blood test".

I have been getting lots of big bruises, mostly on my left thigh, for a couple of months despite not injuring myself. Just ignored them, until I also came up with a massive patch of blood spots below the skin. I also have bad pain in my left hip joint.

Went to gp. She said she thinks the hip pain and bruising aren't related  - the hip pain is likely linked to mechanical back pain, told me to fo yoga. Fine. Sent me for blood tests for bruising, all came back normal apart from slightly low number if leukocytes (every blood test I've ever had in my life always reports that though for some reason) nothing for concern.

I've been doing yoga. That hurts my hip, not helps so far, but maybe I need to persevere.

Last night I got undressed and I have a fist sized pink and purple bruise on my left thigh. It is very vivid colours, but I haven't banged myself. Also a few blood spots on right thigh, and lots of little yellow bruises on my left thigh.

I don't know what to do. It cant be normal, but my blood test says otherwise.

Also, maybe related and maybe not, I'm so so tired. But that could just be the busy time of year. And I've been sweating a lot at night.

I've called gp surgery for advice but the receptionist doesnt see a need for another appointment due to normal blood test. She's going to talk to gp and call me back if I can have an appointment.

I do have private health care through my husbands work, but dont know who I'd need to be referred to. Any ideas anyone?

I hope everyone else on this thread is doing ok.

  • Hi Janey-J,

How kind to be asking after my hyealth. I'd forgotten all about this thread, thought I might be able to provide input given the title and then realised that I'd already contributed.

I was on chemo for about 8 months and for the second time, had a complete response; I'm now in remission again.

I've had ongoing bowel problems for about 3 months now, which culminated in a hospital stay for a partial blockage, due to adhesions. Feel ill all the time and fatigue is a big problem. Most days I sleep for around 16-20 hours and still feel tired.

But I ent ded, which is nice. Kids and grandkids are a joy and I remain a contented man.

Again, thanks for your interest and I hope you find the cause for your bruising soon - keep harassing those docs

    Regards

    Taff

  • Hi Young_mum

I know it's been just over a year since your post, but was wondering if you could possibly advise of the outcome of your symptoms? I am currently going through a very similar scenario and my doctors just keep palming me off with different pain/anti-inflammatory medications, saying the same thing that they're not related and refusing to do any further investigations despite having the issue for almost 3 months. I hope it turned out well for you.

  • Hi there!

i am sorry to hear about what you're going through - I hope it has eased for you?

i am replying because I'm going through the same thing at the moment, I've got unexplained purple/yellow/blue bruises all over my legs and all my blood tests were completely normal.

I also have a very itchy rash all over my legs too.

just wondering if you have since found out what was causing it? I'm sick of getting shrugged off when it's really bothering me!!
