Under legal age to have smear

14 Sep 2018 15:41

Hi im lucy been on contraception since the age of around 13. Had the implant for over a year causing me to be on my period daily. Changed to the pill. have also been on the depo which was the last contraception i used and I had no periods on the depo. Ive been off contraception for well over a year, for my body to get back to normal, as being on it for so many years I just wanted my body to get back to normal. I wasnt sexutally active till i turned 17. Well over a year later (been off concrecpetion 1/2 years) and im 20 years old and on my period every single day, I get bad discharge, sometimes black, dark red, bright red its always different but lately always bloody. Ive been to my GP and when examined she said its very inflamed down below and discharge looked yellow. Polysistic ovary runs in the family but Ive been for a ultra sound scan today and everything looks fine. Been tested for infections, STI's all come back negative. Im now just waiting on my bloods. Im just very concerned because every single one of my symptoms points to cervical cancer, and i am not allowed a smear as under 24. Just wondered if anyone could help me? Im happy to do all the tests i can to rule out anything that this might possibly be. I bruise very easily, I'm on my period constantly with no breaks, bloody discharge, intercourse is painful, get bad pelvic pain and as of recent extremely bad leg pain. I am a smoker, and my diet is poor as I don't eat fruit or veg hardly ever. I know its time to make lifestyle changes in those aspects but I need answers as to whats going on with me. Sorry this message is so long. I just know my body is trying to tell me something I just know it

Hi Lucy

Thanks for your post.

I am sorry to learn that you have concerns about your health.

We are sometimes contacted by people who tell us about their symptoms as they think something is very wrong. But it is very difficult for us to say very much. This is because there are not really any symptoms that are only specific to cervical cancer. Symptoms of cancer are the same symptoms for other far more likely non-cancerous common medical conditions.

The symptoms that you describe can be down to other causes, such as hormonal changes .

However, it must be stressful coping with some of your symptoms, so it may be best to make another appointment with the GP to discuss your symptoms again and to ask if a referral to a gynaecologist is indicated. Although a smear can't be done by the GP under the age of 25, a gynaecologist may do one if they feel it would be helpful. It's worth bearing in mind that smears are not usually taken in women who have symptoms - cervical screening is a preventative national screening programme.

While you are waiting for an appointment, it may be helpful to also try focusing, as you suggested, on a lifestyle change. You may be interested in this link on stopping smoking.

If you want to have a chat with one of us here on the helpline, do give us a call. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

I hope you get this sorted out soon

Under legal age to have smear

Hi Lucy,

I can only second what nurse Wanda has said.

There are just so many conditions with all sorts of symptoms that doctor Google will also tell you could be cancer.  I was in your position and also too young to have a smear but with life-altering symptoms on a daily basis.  Eventually I worked out myself what my condition was and my GP sent me for diagnostic surgery which confirmed it but, as Wanda says, if you get a referally to a gynaecologist they should help work out what is happening and hopefully be able to treat it.

I cannot stress enough how many conditions share symptoms with cervical cancer, and statistically it is just so much more likely to be one of those benign conditions.  The majority of my female friends have some kind of gyne condition that has given them all sorts of symptoms that are also indicated in cervical cancer.

Please go see your GP so that they continue to investigate, and hopefully that investigation will include seeing a specialist.

All the best.

I have been referred to gynocology already and keep having tests so far no luck as all negative. But still bleeding daily. Thank you girls for the reply's hope it's just something less drastic like you's have suggested. Is there no other tests they can do though to rule out anything serious like cancer other then the smear. I hope I don't have it just obviously quite concerned cause the most serious thing is that and they cannot test me for it
