I phoned my GP this morning regarding a breast lump that appeared a few weeks ago, in addition to reappearing armpit lumps I've had for over a month. They told me their earliest appointment wasn't until August 29th. Should I wait? What do I do?
We know it’s a worrying time for people with cancer. Please read our information about coronavirus and cancer alongside this page. If you have symptoms of cancer you should still contact your doctor and go to any appointments you have. Spotting cancer early means treatment is more likely to be successful.

Hello and thanks for posting
I can appreciate how difficult this must be for you.
It's difficult to know what may be best, as the pandemic has changed the way practices work within the surgery setting. Perhaps you can call and ask if it would be worth calling on a daily basis to see if there are any cancellations . Alternatively, ask to speak to the GP to see if you can have a telephone conversation to start off with, so a history can be taken.
I'm afraid that a referral to a breast clinic is done via the GP, although alternatively, you can try going privately, but there are costs and you may still need to wait to be seen.
I can appreciate this is stressful and causing you a lot of worry and I do hope you can get to be seen earlier.
All the best
Welcome to our forum. Did you tell the receptionist exactly what your symptoms are? If they were aware of them, I would expect you to be seen as a matter of urgency. I would certainly follow Wanda's advice and let them know that you are willing to take any cancellations that might come up in the meantime.
Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.
Hi. I phoned my gp and told the receptionist my symptoms. I had a telephone consultation the same day and they gave me the option of going for an examination at the surgery or being sent straight to the clinic. As others have said, tell the receptionist your symptons and tell them you're concerned. Good luck
If you can contact your GP as Wanda says it may be that you can get a cancellation sooner. I was in a situation in that I did not agree with an ultrasound scan diagnosis so I contacted a local Spire hospital who did weekly breast care appointments and was seen by a consultant in 48 hours, it was the best £200 I've ever spent on a credit card!
Don't wait get that lump checked keep, even get a telephone appointment if you can.
hope you get sorted soon xx
I would question that when you call on Monday. It sounds like that is the first routine appointment (although still an awful wait for routine issues!), but if you explain you would like to be seen as an emergency (given your symptoms), they should be able to see you sooner. Every practice I've known has emergency appointments for urgent issues on the same day if you call first thing.
