Trouble with eating/diet - any tips?

9 Apr 2019 20:31

Hi everybody.

A bit of background about me: I have stage 2 Ewing's Sarcoma and I was diagnosed in Decmeber last year. Ever since I started my treatment, like most people I've had awful side effects. The main ones are tiredness and sickness (amongst many others) but my sickness is horrendous and most days I'm sick multiple times a day and mostly every night I'm up every hour being sick.

I've been put on three different types of anti sickness medication and none of them have worked but I'm really struggling to keep my weight up and maintain it. Since the end of January, I've been on build me up shakes because that's all I can stomach. I really want to try and start having physical meals again though but I'm scared of having food again and I'm scared that my body won't be used to it or something.

Has anyone got any tips on what I can do?

Hi after treatment you will eat properly and just make sure you start with small portion your stomach will shrink slightly with not having much in it. You're doctor or specialist should give you a stronger med I had a similar problem but I didn't know I had a hernia at the time like you I was sick day and night. Not very nice. Ginger ale helped me like getting tablets down. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply Billy.

Yeah I will keep trying the anti sickness medication until I find one that works. Fingers crossed something will! Yeah I just want to build my food up again slowly and hopefully put on a bit of weight instead of losing it all the time

Hi BeingMe,

If you're starting to introduce food again then soft foods would be best and small portions.  When I was struggling during chemo I had mashed bananas and baked potatoes (not together obviously).  Both are packed full of much needed energy and are fairly easy to eat.  Thinking about it I could probably have melted some chocolate to have with the banana for more calories, I did add butter to the baked potatoes and occasionally mashed feta or another soft cheese through them.  Mashed beans is another one that could be good.  For something a bit nicer then baked sweet potato is lovely with some feta through it.  Much as we're getting into summer you could also try some really thick soups like carrot, butternut squash etc.

I'm not acquainted with your specific cancer though so obviously you'll need to check if these are things it is safe for you to eat.  It may help to ask to be referred to a hospital dietician?

Hi. Thank you so much for your reply, you have been very helpful.

Yeah I do want to start eating 'normal' food again becasue it's been so long, plus my weight is an issue because it keeps dropping. I just need to get my sickness under control (it's been such a mission to try and find medication that works) but hopefully soon I will find one that works.

Once that is under control, I will be well away and I can hopefully start gaining weight again instead of keeping losing it. How do I get referred to a hospital dietcian? Do I just ask my consulatant?

Take care
