Tongue Biopsy. Waiting on results

13 Jul 2017 22:27

Hello All,

It was last wednesday that I went to the oral surgeon to have a biopsy done on my tongue where I have some white patches/spots on the top and forward section of my tongue.  I am only 30 years old, but having drank and smoked quite a bit for the past 10 years, I am quite concerned to say the least given the increased chances that smokers and drinkers have of getting oral cancer.

The white patches appear to be the only symptom I have.  There is nothing else and no pain at all. I have a follow up appointment on the 2nd of August to go over my biopsy results.  Quite a long time to wait really to find out whether or not you have cancer.  I was wondering about people's experiences whether they were diagnosed with cancer or not.   Do people who get diagnosed with cancer receive their results early?  Just kind of wondering in the back of my head that if I don't hear anything before my appointment that it is likely to be a sign of good news.

Also if you have/had any bad habits like I do, did you give them up before you got your biopsy resuits?  I've already ditched the cigarrettes even before my biopsy.  Giving up the drink has been even harder but I stopped drinking so much after my biopsy.  Its really hard giving these things up especially with a rather stressful job.  Not really sure what to do tomorrow as I have a tradition with people from my workplace to go have a pint or two at lunchtime on Fridays.  Naturally with the uncertainty regarding my health, I am inclined to not go or just have a coke.  I will probably get lots of awkward questions as of to why I'm not drinking.  Not sure whether to lie or just tell them what's going on.  At the moment, since I don't know anything, I don't want others to worry about me.  Did you wait to tell anyone you know about even having the biopsy until you knew what the results were?

Many Thanks

Hi Expat,

Sadly, there is no weight in your thoughts. You have been given an appointment for 2nd August because it will take till then to get the results of your biopsy. There is little likelihood of your appointment for results being brought forward as Oncology staff have a tremendous pressure of work.

You may have read of other people getting their results within a week. There are different time scales for people with different types of cancer. Well done for giving up the smoking and the drinking. It is never easy to do this. Why not be honest tomorrow lunchtime? You can say that you are undergoing tests to see if you have cancer. I have found it so much easier to be open with friends and family and discussed it with my friends and family from the outset..

Kind regards,

Jolamine xx

Hello Expat. I hope you went out today and spent time with your friends from work,   I just want to say that i am recovering from tongue cancer I am not or never have been a drinker or smoker so when " they say" it is a smoker/drinkers cancer they are wrong...I was told that i was in the wrong catagory didnt tick the boxes so we will send for you again in 10 to 12 weeks but absolutly nothing to worry about returned 12 weeks later had an understudy take a biopsy  by this time i had earache as well told no nothing to do with tougne go see your doctor again about your ear its nothing to do with your tongue and again you have nothing to worry about this is NOT cancer we will have results in 3 weeks time. returned to be told we will take another biopsy as we didnt take enough so another one taken.. returned 3 weeks later no its not cancer but it could turn nasty if not treated  we will bring you back and remove it my husband said no  she has been through enough and the earache every day my wife has been coming to you since May it is now September Oh that long...ok go have a cup of tea come back I will remove it in half an hour. Brought back 3 weeks later to be told sorry it is cancer we will bring you in and operate might have to do skin graft. the point im making here is to be told you dont smoke/drink your not in the right catagory is crazy and the earache was caused by the cancer it is the same nerve from ear to tongue this cancer is more common now than ever I dont mean to frighten you Expat but if you are diagnosed with this remember you will get through it its tough but you will get through it...keep your family and friends close as we all need someone to help us when things get tough...and this chatline is a great help too...god bless D.

Hi Expat,

I put some respones to your questions.

Results wise, I got my results quickly, my consultant sped up the results and I had them within a week of biospy.

I don't think it would make a difference if you give up bad habbits before a biopsy. But regardless of the result, you should try to give them up anyway if you can.

I had to have time off work for the biospy half a day, so I told them I was having it but nothing more until I got the result.

Cancer does not have to relate to anything we have done, sometimes it just happens. I was 23, hardly drunk and did not smoke. That being said however, now I am recovered, I have the odd drink. You can't live in fear, more so when in the 20's/30's.

Please keep us updated, good luck.

Hello Jolamine,

Thank You again for the kind words.  Giving up smoking and drinking is hard, but I am doing my best at moment to keep myself busy and my mind off of things.  In the end I told my colleagues I was having a dry July.  So in the end I withheld the fact that I had a biopsy.  I didn't want awkward questions or to even talk about it since I'm trying to not think about it at all.  Whatever the results are of the biopsy that I get on my appointment in August, I will then tell them.

Many Thanks.

Hello DeeMc.  I did indeed to go the pub with my friends, but I stuck to a pint of coke rather than beer.  Thank You for sharing your experience and am so sorry for what you have gone through.  Naturally before my biopsy, I knew nothing about tongue cancer or any oral cancer for that matter.  It is sad to hear so many stories like yours of where this has happened to healthy people and sounds as if it should have been identified earlier.  I am fortuante in that my dentist identified the white spots on my tongue and asked me to come back in a couple of weeks if the spots did not disappear.  They did not so she decided to refer me to a specialist.  If my dentist hadn't seen the spots and become concerned about them, I probably would not have noticied or given it another thought as I don't have any other symptoms.  No pain, no discomfort.  Nothing other than these white spots/patches.  I am hoping that its just leukoplakia and not cancerous, but it is also good to hear others' stories and know that if the worst does come from my biopsy results that it will be treatable and will get through it.  Thanks again for sharing.

Many Thanks.

Hello Space_1999

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and respond.  So after you had your biopsy, did you have a set date when you would meet with the specialist and they ended up calling you in early when they had the results or did they just say they would call you when they had the results?  It's only a week and a half since my biopsy was done and the idea of waiting untl the 2nd of August is making a me a little crazy.

I guess I gave up the bad habits in the event that it might be just leukoplakia in which case I think continuing drinking and smoking to any degree would be taking a gamble with my health until it is removed if it is indeed leukoplakia.

Anywho, thank you for the kind words.  I am doing my best to not be anxious about it and trying to keep myself busy.  I am hoping for the best, but also trying to mentally prepare myself for the worst.

Many Thanks.

Hi Expat,

Your explanation of a 'dry July' was a stroke of genius. Did you still go out with your friends or did you avoid the temptation? It sounds as if you are coping with this  time well despite the anxiety you feel. As you rightly say, there is time to tell your friends when you have the results and if they are positive.

I am thinking of and praying for a better outcome.

Stay strong.

Kind regards,

Jolamine xx

Hi Expat,

No worries.

After the biopsy, the hospital called and told me to come in after just a week. They told me it was cancer, they then gave me dates to meet with different people. I was on the operating table within three weeks.

Pretty quick for the NHS!

Let us know how you get on.

Hello All,

I had my biopsy results last week.  Thankfully no malignancy and was diagnosed with leukoplakia and they were happy to discharge me.  This was quite a weight lifted from my shoulders and have had a new appreciation for life I think after this experience.  It definately gave me the kick up the backside to finally quit smoking.

I want to thank all of you for your support and for having the courage to share your experiences and stories to help guide others and provide support.  You all are awesome people.  I wish you all the best!

Take care.

Hi Expat,

Somehow or other I have missed this post and couldn't help but comment when I read it. This is fantastic news. We don't hear enough good news on this site!!

I am delighted to hear that this scare has convinced you to quit smoking and I hope that you manage to do this.

A scare like this is a wake-up call and teaches you how to appreciate every day that comes along as a bonus.

Take care,

Hi Your post was over a year ago so not sure if you'll see this but I had a tongue biopsy 4 hours ago and the pain is savage. I have an appointment in 2 weeks to discuss the results. Quite honestly I don't want any more needles or knives anywhere near my tongue, the pain of swallowing is unbearable.

I wanted to ask you if the pain post-op is as bad as the tongue biopsy pain because if I get bad news I don't think I would want to go ahead with surgery - always thought I had a fairly high pain threshold but this has floored me. If it is malignant, I hope there are options other than surgery ☹️

Hi Kitty,

I had two tongue biopsies just over two weeks ago. I wonder if its where the biopsy is taken from or perhaps the doc thats doing the procedure. Mine were no problem at all. Having said that Im scheduled for another tomorrow on hard palate so no stitches it will be cauterised so dont know what this will be like painwise:-(

My results came back with the dreaded its cancer. They suspect its spread so further tests. I am waiting till they have all the meetings etc to be told the fuller picture. Like you I am not sure if this is the road for me.

I wish you all the best and hope you get a good result.xxx

Hi Demc

Thank you for your kind words of encouragment Happy

Well I had my palate biopsy yesterday. The injections were quite quite painful one side of palate didnt numb up at all. The electro cautery was pretty painfull too,she had alot of goes at it to stop the bleeding. She said you have a great pain threshold! I thought to myself you wouldnt want to be on the recieving end yourself lol.

I had to wait there at hospital for 2.5 hrs for ct scan and was worried that the numbness would wear off by then,so I took an ibuprofen and was fine. I reported in early so they took me a bit earlier too.

She advised that hole in palate will take around 3 weeks to heal so back to soft diet. I was eating normal within a few days of previous tongue biopsies I even tackled eating american hard gums(my achiles heel) those sweets. The hospital staff are all lovely, though the surgeon is quite rough I told the girls yesterday,I think he thought I was under anaesthetic, they all laughed and said heavy handed men dont have the light touch of women lol.

Take care and keep well xx

Guys So sorry, didn't realise anyone had responded! I assumed I would get an email saying there was a reply.

Thank you so much for the support ( not getting much from Hubby! )

Day 5 now and still clock-watching to see when I can take some more painkillers. The salt rinses help but the Difflam spray is useless.

On the first night I managed to get some sleep with the aid of co-codamol but was awoken by a popping sensation in the area of the biopsy - pretty certain it was the stitch coming away but decided that there was no way I was returning to the hospital to have another one put in.

I'm self-employed so was back at work the next day and my colleagues were horrified by the huge purple bruise under the tongue which I assume was from the needle when they gave me the lignocaine. And the nasty swelling on the side of my tongue, much bigger and more painful than the original lesion.

The young man carrying out the procedure was being guided by the nurse holding my tongue to one side - after 3 needles, he attempted the biopsy only to have me nearly jump out of the chair as I could still feel pain. The 4th injection completely numbed the area and he was then able to take a piece of tissue. I know trainees have to start somewhere but I couldn't help but think Why me, Lord!!

Another friend who had a very painful tongue biopsy also had tissue taken from the side of the tongue so this must be the most sensitive area.

It really helps to know you went through it too, demc, on the NHS website it says a punch biopsy doesn't need stitches ( it did) and that it is not very painful - humph! I was so incensed that I emailed them saying they should change their advice but I got a very bland response saying my comments would be passed on to the appropriate department.

Even taking tablets was torture to begin with but I read somewhere that tipping your chin downwards as you swallow would help, and it did.

Oh yes and I bought a mouthguard from eBay, a silicone one which you dip in hot water and mould to your teeth - the consultant told me to ask my dentist to make one to wear at night so the sore area didn't touch my teeth but I wanted to try it ASAP and couldn't get in to the dentist - waste of money, I can't sleep with a mouth full of plastic, it was horrible.

And Clara So sorry the news is bad. My heart aches for you and I hope that they can fully eradicate the cancer. A very young friend of mine was given a diagnosis of cancer of the salivary gland, I read up on it and sat there with tears rolling down my cheeks - the treatment involves removal of the gland, jawbone and palate. I imagined her with facial scars ( she's 27) and it said patients may need speech therapy after they receive the new palate. But do you know what - the scars are hardly visible, she looks amazing, and her speech is almost as it used to be, only when she's tired do we notice that she slurs a little.

It really is incredible what surgeons can do today. Keep in touch and let us know how you get on xx

Hi Bengalkitty,

Thank you so much for your reply and kind words. I dont get email notification either I just pop into the threads Ive been on and have a look for any replies etc.

It sounds like your biopsy has been a horror one. My stitches started to break down by day 5 and both biopsies healed really well. Mind you Ive had a horrible 4 days with the latest palate biopsy it was so painful I thought it must be infected. But it has improved by yesterday I could eat sunday dinner albeit very slowly.I find if you take a painkiller 30min before eating it helps alot.

My late husband had parotid gland cancer so visiting maxfac clinics with him for 5yrs I seen and learned an awful lot so I kind-of know what Im looking at even before looking into that Dr Google with the scary stuff.

I know what you mean about junior docs Ive had one really good 2nd not so good:-)

Its another 10 days till I see consultant for test results and stageing etc. In the meantime I got a bowel cancer test kit in post and an appt for a mammogram. Happy days! I maybe glow in the dark soon lol.

One thing Im disapointed about is that I am aware of oral cancer having kept a close eye on my husbands mouth and neck and I only spotted this tumour because of a nasty throat infection as its in a tricky area. All the Drs that have seen it say the same thing. So if it has spread it mustve done very quickly. When the consultant took photos of it he blinded me with the flash he is also very rough pulling tongue out to its max like its elastic or something.

Take care and best wishes xx

Good to hear from you!

In your msg to Bengalkitty you said biopsy was worst pain,so you felt less pain after surgery?

My husband and I both had great sense of humour people used to say we were like best pals.

I am feeling just a wee bit guilty that I am managing food better than other poor souls on here. I have been craving for toast, so today I had some it wasnt easy but I did manage it Happy Daughter asked today if I wanted her to buy some american gums I had to admit to already having 3 bags of them waiting for me.

Take care and best wishes xx

Oh Lord You two have really been through the mill! But have kept your sense of humour and I salute you both.

I also did the bowel cancer test and it came back negative. But ( runs and hides) - I cancelled the mammogram. I know, I know. But I am not very well blessed in that department and when I got called for the first one, they could hardly find enough flesh to squeeze between the plates and it was very uncomfortable to say the least ( imagine a test for testicular cancer where they clamped the organs like that!! But we women are expected to grin and bear it.)

So although as a health care professional myself I would always advise regular mammograms, I'm afraid I don't take my own advice and rely on self checks. Any lump which might develop would be very obvious in my small bosom.  I just know I'm going to get slated for saying that...
